what is the best tax software to use on your computer? I went to the store and looked at the tax software selection. There were lots of things to get, any suggestions?

We use Lacerte for our taxes but I only work for an accounting and tax company as a data entryist so I wouldn't know the details.

this is slightly off from tax computer software. I worked with my college this summer and, for some reason, the school didn't take out taxes. My grandmother and grandfather (who was an auditor) said that I probably made too little per hour to pay taxes. My tax booklet came in today and I am wondering what the heck is going on with my taxes? It's not the W-2 but a whole appr. 30 page book for my parents' tax lady to work with. I didn't think to keep the check stubs that my pay checks were attached to. So what now?

Tax software: I like TurboTax personally, but I haven't tried anything else.

W2 forms: Have to be mailed by your employer by Jan. 31. I doubt that they'd be ready yet. You just got the book/instructions/forms from the government. If you don't have a W2 from the school by the first week in Feb, then call them and find out what the deal is.

Contact your employer and tell them what you need. They are required to provide you with duplicate info.

Is it a book of payment coupons? Sounds like when you get your W-2 from the school your tax preparer can figure out what tax you owe and then you use the coupons in the book to make payments (like each month or so). (At least that's what AR does for state taxes if necessary...)

Actually it could be just the tax forms and directions for filling them out. 8.5 by 11 pages? Printed on newsprint? Says something like Form 1040 on the front?

So I'd have to owe the government? I think I wrote exempt on my tax forms when I went to work there because I am a dependent and have no one depending on me to work.

When I worked for a public university they didn't take out taxes because we were full-time students employed for the government or some such nonsense - it was great!

If you are a dependent then your parents have to claim your income and pay taxes on it. If they don't claim you, then you have to file and yes, you may end up owing. It depends on how much money you made.

Unfortunitely I am not a dependant LOL. I went to the staples around the corner and spoke to the associate, lotso different choices, still putting it off, HA. I will just see what they tell me to do and go with it. They had a pretty good selection.

We use TurboTax for our taxes and it works great - I can usually do mine in about 45 minutes.

Co-sign on the ease of Turbo tax. The other benefit is that when you use it year to year on the same computer, you don't have to retype your basic info. It also looks for deductions and things that could trigger an audit.

He told me that Turbo Tax was the most popular, and one of the easiest. Thanks a million y'all, I really appreciate your help.

Yeah, efiling is great, but I don’t like learning software, so I use TaxBrain.com. That and I remember turbotx getting some bad press last year for mucking up peoples computers with their copy protection additive. Doing the return on the website last year was painless and they have online help in case you run into any questions.
