expansion
With all these threads about expansion, it got me to thinking.
SAI's expansion is COMPLETELY different than NPC. If the minimum number of girls wants to bring SAI to a campus, it will be done, as long as they do the required stuff. There's no presentations, waiting for other groups to meet quota, nothing. It seems to me that if a group of dedicated girls on a campus wants to bring ANY sorority to campus, they should be allowed to. I know that my thoughts don't amount to much since I am not in an NPC sorority. But still...I dunno. SAI continues to grow every year. Currently we have 204 active college chapters and 116 alum chapters. It doesn't seem like the NPC greeks grow as much, but I could very well be wrong. Let's discuss! :) |
NPC groups are much more intricately structured, and for the most part, require much larger chapter sizes and more alumni support to function effectively. NPC groups don't just grow in the number of chapters, they also strive to grow average chapter size, and they strive to grow in alumni involvement. I would be willing to bet that the average chapter size of an NPC group is much larger than that of any professional group.

I kinda have to agree with my musical sister ;) . When Tau Beta Sigma wants to expand the girls must locate a sister chapter, find a sponser (sometimes very hard) and work from there. On average our chapter size runs somewhere around under 30. But some southern and western chapters run about 80 and under. Same for SAI, I think. |

NPC has agreed to rules on expansion for all their member groups...if a group doesn't like those rules, they can leave the NPC. Simple as that. |
But how many initiated sisters does SAI have compared to some of the NPCs?
Also, on my campus, we never opened for expansion - we petitioned Gamma Phi Beta directly. If there are no NPCs, that's how it can work, the school doesn't have to always be involved. |
I believe SAIrose is correct, if NPC did do expansion that way there probably would be quicker expansion... but because each org. doesn't want to have MORE orgs than there is interest ( IE... with 15 organizations at a school where only about 100 people a semester are interested in joining... chapter size will be SUPER low) and it would lend more to an environment of competition instead of the supportive network that NPC is supposed to be.

Also, nationally we have 204 active college chapters and 116 alum chapters. **edited because I wasn't thinking and posed 200,000 instead of 100,000. Although, wouldn't it be wonderful if we had initiated that many? :D** |

And I wanted to appologize if my original post sounded like an attack against the NPC. I didn't mean it to sound like that...I'm just trying to gain more insight into it so I can have a better understaning. :) |
I know at Ole Miss it is a bit different to have a new sorority join our campus. For an NPC to join it would be a long process with tons of money invested to find land for a new house, build a new house, make sure alumnae were around in the area, get alumnae involved, get an AAC together, etc. I do know that we do have SAI, TBS, and a new service sorority Omega Phi Alpha. All are doing well and SAI and TBS have been at Ole Miss for many years. I think we are talking about two different processes. Plus, Ole Miss is not open for expansion at the time to a new NPC chapter.
