A Dangerous Meal at U of Georgia?
CNN and the Associated Press are reporting that the Phi Kappa Psi chapter at U of Georgia is considering disciplinary action against three members -- one killed a raccoon in their parking lot, another skinned it, and the third cooked and ate some of it on Dec. 12.
As you might guess, one of them is getting treatment in case of rabies. With early treatment, of course, he should be OK. The Phi Psi president is reported as saying it was not a fraternity event. See http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/South/12/...on.slaying.ap/ Not exactly sure what the chapter may be charging them with, though animal cruelty comes to mind. CNN's report says that rabies "can" be fatal if left untreated. That's an understatement; the Centers for Disease Control rabies site notes that there are only 6 documented cases of human survival once the clinical signs of rabies have appeared, and in all 6 cases there had been either pre- or post- exposure prophylactic treatment. (Nope, that's not 6 survivals in one year -- it's 6 out of all modern documented cases of rabies.) Good people, don't mess with wild / strange raccoons -- or bats, dogs, cats, foxes or coyotes, either! |
This is gross.
What these guys did was cruel. I don't think they need to be expelled for it though. Punished? Yes. |
dumbasses, you should never mess with a sick racoon
I am sure the anxiety of the possibility of being infected with rabies will hopefully prevent stunts like this in the future. |
Embarrassing :o

Wow...those crazy, zany brothers of Georgia Alpha-what a way to represent the fraternity!
But isn't raccoon considered a delicacy in France, or at least in the finest trailer parks across the U.S.??? Notice I didn't say SOUTHERN trailer parks as not to offend any members from the South! |
I think the sickness and embarassment these boys are experiencing will be punishment enough. There is no reason to sanction the fraternity for this, either.
|
All I have to say is...EWWWW!
|
Don't worry a/b offending the south... Here in Tennessee we know ALL about the [finest?!] trailer parks!

Well actually my family is from the south (no...not a trailer park...but from the deep south) and my parents have had raccoon before.
My father goes out and kills and it and my mom skins it, cleans its, and then cooks it in a pressure cooker. I've never eaten it before, but I guess it doesnt take bad...and hey...at least it's not possum  Its rough to be a northerner with country parents lol... |
why punish - i've heard of a lot of people who eat racoon and squirrel for that matter (my poor mascot).
hell, the only problem i see here is that they were stupid enough to catch the rabid one. that's punishment enough... marissa |
I, too, have heard of people eating raccoon meat. I also have heard of people eating rabbit meat, as well. I just think it might have been better for all involved to have caught it off campus.
And, while it might not be socially acceptable to eat such creatures in your area, don't judge those who do... I personally would rather have deer meat before snails or chitterlings (pig intestines for those who don't know...) any day! Again, I think it would have been more appropriate if done off campus. |

They killed a racoon. I am sure they didn't know it had rabies. People hunt all the time and eat, deer, rabbit, quail, squirrel and yes even racoon. Is the issue they killed it on fraternity property or didn't get it tested before they ate it? Hunting or trapping isn't illegal as far as I know and not cruelty to animals either.
