Lack of involvement
I don't know if this is just at my college, or everywhere...
But when I look through old ASU yearbooks, man, students used to be so much more involved. Greek Life was a LOT bigger...and the music Greeks were really big...each group had at least 25 members(that's big for music GLOs). Now, each group MAYBE has 15. Not only were the Greek groups bigger...but I noticed under the Who's WHo section, where it lists their orgs, most that were in SAI or TBS were also in a social sorority. ONe girl listed was even in 3 GLOs--SAI, TBS, and Alpha Gam! If you look at pics of pep rallies, dances, other campus activities...man, looks like EVERYONE went, and homecoming was a really big deal. Now, at least here, the only ones that go to the Pep Rallies are the ones that have to (the band, cheerleaders, and the Greeks). I just think it's sad to see how little involved students are. Thoughts? |
I agree. San Diego State used to be the EXACT same way.
As a party school in a tourist town, people have just found better ways to pass their time, and because our school's administration is on shrooms and dos not really care about the needs of the students as a whole, I guess people have tuned out. Another thing I believe, as a 50 yr old trapped in a 21 yr old man's body, is that people just don't care about much anymore outside their own worries. Individualism, commercialism, sensationalism and capitalism have just tuned out the whole tradition of supporting a team/community. Maybe it's where I live (I know most schools that actually have GOOD teams have good support), which is why I want out of San Diego, and to a much more deep, non-superficial, non-apathetic environment. |
