I have a question: does being on welfare diminish a person's value in your eyes?

I just have to put in my two cents. For people who actually are trying to find work and better their lives I think welfare is a good help. Then there are the people who do not work and don't really intend on working but they are as happy as can be to take my money that I have to pay for these lazy people on welfare. That is opne thing that really pisses me off. So yes, I believe that some people on welfare are nothing more than trash.

Folks that use welfare to get back on their feet are fine.

I think society needs to find a use for those that choose to use welfare so that they don't have to work. Something like WPA... If we're going to pay you, you need to do something.

A fair question.

I was out of work due to a corporate merger for over a year, and didn't choose to apply for unemployment. That may have been dumb on my part since I've paid into the tax system since I was fifteen years old. Had I been unemployed for another month or two, I would probably have been forced to file.

My only problem with folks on welfare/unemployment, etc. are the ones who do nothing to better their own situation.

Welfare and unemployment are not really the same. As you said, you paid into unemployment with the tax that comes out of your paycheck and your employer paid into unemployment to pay people like you. You earned your unemployment compensation. And in order to get unemployment, you have to be looking, or you can also receive it if the new job you were forced to take pays less than your old job (I manage the unemployment comp fund at the city I work for). But, the rules also vary by state.

Welfare is not the same process, they don't pay into it before they receive from it..

And I agree with what's been said before. Those who try to get off welfare are ok, those who just milk the system deserve to get yanked from it.

Don't forget the ones who obviously don't believe in birth control.

so completely true- especially when it is so widely available and low or no cost.... why make the problem worse....? Children are beautiful and deserve to have a loving and caring atmosphere- when they are born into a world of desperation- they often mimic what they know... creating a viscious cycle... it is sad....

I would have to say no! In some states, the state government actually helps those on welfare find jobs, take care of kids/family, help to learn how to manage their finances and such. Maybe all states should actually learn to do that!

One of my friends was actually really sick when she was pregnant and the father had died in march of 01 and her daughter wasn't born until july 01. She was hospitalized and couldn't work. She went on welfare and a couple of months after she had her daughter she went off welfare and found a job. Now, that I do admire--single parent who actually wants to make a life for herself and kid! :)

I am kind of appalled by some of the comments that are being made on here.

Some people honestly need welfare, I am a community organizer, where I see the need for this in many communities. Keep in mind every city, every state is different, so in some states yes more problems are available for people to take part in to better their lives. In other cities there is not, and people struggle. I know and have worked with many families who yes probably could do more then what they are doing but can't due to one reason or another and mainly in my city due to the lack of programs to help folks, like Job Training and Placement and etc...

Have a heart people, let's see some of you volunteer at local places to really see the people in need and not the reality show based Hollywood version of what welfare is.

PiKA2001 02-22-2007 12:40 AM

Please don't bring this up during tax season - It's insensitive to those who support themselves.

OK, so there's a 'need' for welfare programs - no one has disagreed, so far.

Wait, so in some cities there is absolutely zero chance for some people to help themselves? Bwuh? Explain this - what shackles are preventing people from taking an unskilled, blue-collar position?

This is nonsense - can they do more than they are doing, or can't they? C'mon, don't pass on logic here - Job Training and Placement? Seriously? It's society's job to train people to have a job?

Also, you honestly believe there are an overwhelming number of situations where people are incapable of getting a job without training? I can't imagine what training would be required for food service, retail or etc. This doesn't really hold water for me, can you explain what I'm missing?

No one is disputing that people are in need - the problems expressed so far have to do with those who abuse the system. Which do you think is the larger group: the people incapable of helping themselves, or the people who simply refuse to?
