Question about a Chapter?

Hey Girls,
I was just reading a rush thread over on the rush board and one of the girls rushing this spring is at Southern Methodist University. Now she listed 8 sororities. ADPi WAS NOT one of them. I say this because according to my really (emphasis on really) old Alpha book (that I got in 1998) we have a chapter there, Alpha Zeta. Did this chapter close or something? I'm just curious to why we weren't listed as being a chapter that she is rushing this spring. Anyone know the answer to this?

Brianna

We did have a chapter there at one time. It closed but I'm not sure when.

This is what I found on the SMU Greek Panhellenic Website:

National Panhellenic Member Organizations:

*Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Alpha Sigma Tau
Alpha Xi Delta
*Chi Omega
*Delta Delta Delta
*Delta Gamma
Delta Phi Epsilon
Delta Zeta
*Gamma Phi Beta
*Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
*Kappa Kappa Gamma
Phi Mu
Phi Sigma Sigma
*Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Delta Tau
Sigma Kappa
Sigma Sigma Sigma
Theta Phi Alpha
Zeta Tau Alpha

* Chapters currently active at SMU

I do not know the answer to when they closed though...almost all of the ADPi chapter websites still have them open...I also do not get why SMU lists all those chapters rather than just listing the active ones. Any SMU greeks on here that know the answer??

"Sisters" says that Alpha Zeta closed in 1998. When Mr. honeychile & I were in Dallas 2 years ago, we drove around the campus for something like an hour, looking for the house, but never found. Now I know why!

my boyfriend's sister went there... I can probably find something out from her, considering he said at one point that she was excited to find out that I was an ADPi.

The AZ HC still owns the house but rents it to FCA or some other group like that. I've never seen it but I've heard it's beautiful!

kateshort is the webmaster for the Eta Psi chapter at Valpo, and does an outstanding job of keeping a current list of chapters updated on the website...you can go here:
Eta Psi's Website
Look for the List of All Chapters once you get past the splash page :)

I'm not an SMU greek, but maybe they list the entire NPC so that women interested in going greek know the different NPC organizations out there???

If that indeed is why they do it that way, it's a wonderful idea! How many people who have never been part of the Greek System are shocked to hear about GLOs that aren't on their campus? Kudos to the SMU Panhellenic!!

Just an fyi, since we aren't quite sure on the status of the Alpha Zeta chapter and when (or if) they closed or what the deal is. I emailed EO but because of the holidays they will be out of the office on the 24th thru the 2nd. So who knows when someone will get back to me. As soon as I know anything I'll post it.
I have a feeling that they obviously closed after I was initiated because my book is from 1998.

I thought a fraternity either rented it or bought it.......or maybe that's another school where adpi bought a frat house after closing..i odn't know, i'm confused.

According to the List of All Chapters, AZ closed in 1998, as honey found in Sisters

WLFEO 12-22-2003 11:52 PM

Yes, they are definitely closed. I know many alumnae from that chapter and they are all wonderful women.

texas*princess 12-23-2003 12:46 AM

Yep, like others have mentioned, the SMU chapter is closed :( I don't know exactly why they closed, but I could probably find out since their chapter was so close to ours. I really wish their chapter wasn't closed :(

vandy_violet 12-23-2003 02:42 AM

I was looking at the chapter list and I noticed that a lot of the chapters that went inactive did so in the '70's-'80's. Is there a specific reason for this trend, like a general decline in sororities at the time? Did sororities in general lose chapters during certain times? It's kind of a bummer to see we've lost chapters at some big schools, too-does anyone know which chapter was the last to be recolonized? It would be awesome to recolonize at SMU eventually, and LSU.
