I'd like to reconvene for a time. I'm calling a metting. It's my right because I live in a real state, and not one that was made a state later. The only reason we have more than 13 states is because people from the first 13 moved there and then those bastards wouldn't shut up. Seriously, Tennese, Kentucky, Ohio, etc, have no reason at all to even exist on the map. Do you know why Ohio is where it is? Because there was a river and some mountains and some one was like "okay that can be a state."

Well, you're just a tad off there. No mountains in Ohio -- but some really pretty rolling hills in the S.E.

Of course the real reason for Ohio is a bunch of Revolunary War heros who were deeded land in lieu of pay for their war service, who formed the Ohio Company and settled the Northwest Territory. My Alma Mater was chartered in the same ordinance that formed the territory.

Oh, and it was some Ohioans who helped the U.S. Leigon defeat the Iriquois Confederacy and British Army to help secure the new nation from attack at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. That battle was fought on the farm where my wife grew up. Her father owned the land. It's a park now.

In the ensuing years, Ohio has produced four U.S. Presidents, has more cities in the major TV markets than any other state in the union, given us the Wright Brothers, an excellent state university system -- including the oldest public university West of the Allegheny/Apalachian Mountains (Ohio University, chartered in 1787 and founded in 1804), is one of the most important "swing states" in any election and, just for the heck of it, produced last year's National Champion college football team.

Oh yeah, and it also was on the winning side in the Civil War and produced a couple of the generals probably most responsible for that, including U. S. Grant. Great general, lousy President. Oh well, you can't win them all.

So, I find it facinating that my home state doesn't deserve to exist, but I don't think I'll appologize for it.

and BTW, you can keep your original 13 colonies. I'll be doing just fine in the only state to ever have been it's own nation complete with foriegn embassies and recognition from European countries, thank you very much. I think y'all know which one i'm referring to.

KS 361 times yes, i realize that Texas, as it's own republic suffered massive debt issues, but in today's society we wouldn't have to deal with that, cuz we'd just jack up our oil prices to the rest of y'all :D

i don't live in a state... i live in a commonwealth..

just felt the need to share that.

A Commonwealth can also exist as a group of countries, which are tied together through one common element. For example the Commonweath of the British Empire, which includes countries that are soverign, but were at one point British nations, and whom still recognize the Soverign of the United Kingdom as their official Head of State. There are 53 member nations including, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and India.

i'm not quite sure what the argument is.. Massachusetts is referred to as a commonwealth, not a state. We call it "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts" not "The State of Massachusetts". You can look up dictionary definitions of commonwealth all you want, but I'm going to go by what the historical documents say, not American Heritage. I think they have a bit of a better idea.

and wow, for someone who gets all bent out of a shape when someone makes some slight comment about Texas, way to bash Mass.

Well, the term commonwealth is used to refer to a state. Kind of like a SUV is a form of an automobile. You can call it an SUV, Explorer, suburban, whatever, but, at the end of the day, it's still an automobile.

That's fine, you can call it the Commonwealth of Massachusettes till you're blue in the face. But, we are the United States of America, not the United States and 4 Commonwealths of America.

Not to nitpick, but the source i cited was American Heritage not Websters. PLease people, we must adhere to academic integrity on GC. I know it's just a fun website and nothing is being used for academic debate or scholarly research, but still.

And i don't get all bent out of shape when someone makes a slight comment about Texas. I either attribute it to their lack of knowledge about Texas or jealousy/envy and smile and move along.

KS 361 times a state is a state, i don't care if you call it a commonwealth, republic, jingoistic territory or Bob, it's still a state, just like the Great State of Texas

People need to calm down. Kentucky was part of VA which is why its a commonwealth cuz we are.

I was really just restating 4th grade US and VA history but being a complete jerk about it becasue its finals time. If anyone is offended, I suggest you read the thread on ritual suicide and then try it out.

I thought it was funny...but maybe thats because I'm from a real state too.

Virginia is irrelevant, and everything is ruled by the Empire State. Submit your request to Federal Hall, and we might get around to considering it. :cool:
