Any Home Remedies out there?

I know there are many people who have learned home remedies from relatives that gives the cure-all for anything.

Do you have any remedies that you would like to share?

My grandmother would always give us a mixture of honey and allum(sp?) for colds. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Use a can of coca-cola to clean your toilet bowl. The acid "eats up" that stuff around the rim...

When my son was a baby and he had a fever, my mother-in-law would gather a specific type of tea leaves, put them in a warm bath and bathe my son. She said these type of leaves were used to "draw out" the fever. She did the same thing to my husband when he was a baby. He would even pretend to be sick just so that he could have a "bush bath". I thought it was strange, but it worked. My son loved it and always fell asleep right after his bath.

Another thing I learned here is using fresh aloe. It is used for everything here. Even as a tea for tummy aches (I think). I've heard that it is very bitter, though. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif My grandmother always had an aloe plant in our house (NYC) and used it for everything too. Back then, I thought it was just a Puerto Rican/Old Wives Tale thing. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Chamomile tea helps alleviate cramps. Also you can use chamomile to give yourself a facial.
Glass of lemon water in the morning cleanses your system.
A geranium tincture, (geranium, alcohol, and water), is excellent for eczema. It is also just a good overall toner. I found out this winter how well this really works.
Of course, gargling with salt water really helps a sore throat.
I am full of these things.

Peppermint or spearmint for an upset stomach is wonderful.I usually drink a mint tea but mint candies work just as well. Also I have heard to use cloves on a toothache until you can get to the dentist.A hot toddy also helps relieves a cold(especially at bedtime) and if you are have sinus problems put Vicks Vapo Rub right directly on the place you have sinus pressure. It will make your eyes water but it will help.

The first one I thought of is really gross...Putting earwax on a cold sore will make it go away. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

using warm salt water to draw the nasiness out of an absess(sp)on infected gums or tooth

after having a baby you should use a little of the old school lysol(the brown kind) in your first bath at home, it will clean away any infection in stitches. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Hot toddies will make you sweat out a fever (a combo of Jack Daniels, lemon, honey, and tea) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

LOL @ Jack...shoot! ANY kind of liquor will do! If no liquor is in sight, I have to put some cough syrup in mine or sumin. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Can't stand Jack Daniels http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I would put some rum (Bacardi) in my hot toddies.

Echinacea (sp) or Goldenseal tea is used to build the immune system. Goldenseal is VERY BITTER, so use lemon and honey to make it taste better.

I use aloe for cuts and scratches and chamomile tea is good for cramps or just to relax http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

So true, so true...except I use overproof Jamaican rum http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

My mother and grandmother used to give me cerassie tea to clear my face up and clear my system out. It's very bitter http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif , but it works.

Folks and their alcohol! Anyway, toothpaste will help get rid of that large pimple/zit. It also will help clean your jewelry(with an old toothbrush)-but don't forget to rinse!

My dad who's a dentist says when your gums are bleeding due to a minor periodontal infection, brush with a paste of Arm&Hammer's Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide. It will clear up the infection.

If you want to lighten your hair naturally, put 2 tlbsp. of lemon juice to 1 cup of water with essential hair oils into a spray bottle and spray your wet hair while you're sun bathing... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif For us SoCals out there!!! Wasn't today nice!!! Summer's almost here!

Drink cranberry/rasberry juice to clear up any yeast/urinary tract infections. I forgot how long you'd do it. But drinking either one or mixture thereof, is good for you anyways...

And always drink 8 glasses of water, daily...

For babies: For constipation, mix one tablespoon of Karo syrup in a water bottle and shake well . For severe constipation, give him about one half tablespoon straight. Wait a little while and YOU WILL SEE RESULTS! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif (Do not use honey. It carries bacteria that can make your little one very sick.)

My mom says that for babies with hiccups, take two matches and cross them in the mold of a baby's head. She said it worked for us, I wouldn't know.

For canker sores, rub the sores with salt(on a Q-tip) and/or gargle with peroxide(DO NOT SWALLOW). Trust me, it works.

This has been used for all of us in the family that have gotten sick-I don't know if any of ya'll use this...

Whenever one of us catches a cold, my mother/aunts/grandma make "special" tea. They take any brand plain (Lipton) tea, lemon, and honey-mix until sweet. Then add a teaspoon of Vicks VapoRub (yeah I know!) to it and drink.

I know that Vicks wasn't made to eat, but we've been using this for generations down-it works!
