Fratelli d'Italia, l'Italia s'è desta
In addition of Optimist Prime's thread of national anthems,
I bimbi d'Italia Si chiamano Balilla: Il suon d'ogni squilla I vespri suonò. :) |
I read "Fratelli" and immediately I thought this was going to be a "Tribute to the Goonies" thread.

I was about to order a large pizza, but never mind.

I love the Italian National Anthem. I've never heard the words, but it gives me chills to hear it, just as with the United States National Anthem.
ETA: Do you have the English lyrics to the anthem? |
While posting National Anthems, here's one that gives me thrills whenever I hear it:
Hatikvah - The Hope. State of Israel. Kol od balevav penimah nefesh Yehudi homiyah Ulefa-atej mizrach kadimah 'ayin LeTsion, tsofiah. Od lo awvdah tikwatenu ha'tikvah bat sh'not alpayim liheyot am chofsi beartsenu erets Tsion virushalayim. As long as deep in the heart, The soul of a Jew yearns, And towards the East An eye looks to Zion, Our hope is not yet lost, The hope of two thousand years, To be a free people in our land, The land of Zion and Jerusalem. |
Don't forget the Germans, though they only sing the last stanza of their national anthem today (the first two were banned after World War II):
Blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes, Blühe, deutsches Vaterland. translation: Unity and right and freedom For the German fatherland! Let us strive for all of these Brotherly with heart and hand! Unity and right and freedom Pledge for our happiness! Bloom in the splendour of this happiness, Bloom, my German Fatherland! Or the national anthem of Venezuela: CHORUS Gloria al bravo pueblo Que el yugo lanzó, La Ley respetando La virtud y honor. ¡Abajo Cadenas! ¡Abajo Cadenas! REPEAT CHORUS Translation: Glory to the brave people That threw off the yoke The law respecting Virtue and honor! Off with the chains! Off with the chains!, cried out the Lord The poor man in his hovel, 'Liberty!' he implored. To this holy name, trembled with horror That vile egoism, that once had triumphed |
Found it
Italian Brothers, Italy has awakened, She has wreathed her head With the helmet of Scipio. Where is Victory? She bows her head to you, You, whom God created As the slave of Rome. Let us band together, We are ready to die, (repeat) Italy has called us. (repeat previous four lines) (repeat entire song) |

Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika
Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo, Yizwa imithandazo yethu, Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo. Uit die blou van onse hemel, Uit die diepte van ons see, Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Waar die kranse antwoord gee, Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land. Translation: Lord, bless Africa May her spirit rise high up Hear thou our prayers Lord bless us. Lord, bless Africa Banish wars and strife Lord, bless our nation Of South Africa. Ringing out from our blue heavens From our deep seas breaking round Over everlasting mountains Where the echoing crags resound ... |
Quote:
Italian brothers, Italy has arisen, With Scipio's helmet binding her head. Where is Victory? Let her bow down, For God has made her The slave of Rome. Let us gather in legions, Ready to die! Italy has called! We for centuries Have been downtrodden and derided, Because we are not a people, Because we are divided. Let one flag, one hope Bring us together; The hour has struck For us to join forces. Let us gather in legions, Ready to die! Italy has called! Let us unite and love one another; For union and love Reveal to peoples The way of the Lord Let us swear to free Our native soil; If we are united under God, Who can conquer us? Let us gather in legions, Ready to die! Italy has called! From the Alps to Sicily, Everywhere it is Legnano; Every man has the heart and hand of Ferruccio. The children of Italy Are all called Balilla; Every trumpet blast Sounds the (Sicilian) Vespers. Let us gather in legions, Ready to die! Italy has called! Mercenary swords Are feeble reeds, And the Austrian eagle Has lost his plumes. This eagle that drunk the blood of Italy and Poland, together with the Cossack, But this has burned his gut. Let us gather in legions, Ready to die! Italy has called! |
Here's the link for Italian National Anthem (and you can play music here, too, while reading the history behind the anthem)

:) The Italian national anthem makes me smile anyday. I can always picture my grandmother singing it.
|
I lost faith in the Azzuri when they blew their lead and lost to the frogs in GG at Euro 2000.
I still love Juventus though, should have beaten AC Milan in the Champions League final. Forget Kahn, Buffon is the man. |
What the trukk does soccer have to do with it?
|
I dunno, I hardly ever hijack a thread, and, well, soccer is life.
