Who is Jill Scott?

Hello to the Lovely and Sophisticated Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Whenever I come across something that is new and refreshing, I like to share it with others. Well I've found something that's both new and refreshing.

Who is Jill Scott? Some of you must be asking that very same question right now. Well who is she? She's a sista with a vibe so strong, it's overpowering. You might not know her, but you know her work. She is responsible for the hook for the Roots "You Got Me". Although Erykah Badu sang it and was in the video, Jill Scott was responsible for the hook. If you pick of Common's "Like Water for Chocolate", she's on a cut called "Funky For You". Now she's stepping out on her own. She's apart of a huge team of artists called the Soulquarians. This group includes Erykah Badu, The Roots, D'Angelo, and Common just to name a few. This CD is a must have. She only has one single out that I know of right now. "Getting In the Way". They are showing the video on BET. If you saw the video and liked the single, they are far better grooves on the CD. In the spirit of Erykah, Lauren and Amel, Jill is a refreshing anticdote to todays trite R&B scene. She envokes the soul of Marvin and Tammy, Minnie Ripperton, etc. So if you're in the mood for something different, try Jill Scott. I hope I'm not the only one up in here who's heard of this sista. So dare to be different. Once you here the CD, you'll have no doubt who Jill Scott is.

I totally agree. I have not picked up the CD, but our radio station has been playing the song since like July. I plan on getting her CD as well as others within the week. I saw her on the Chris Rock show. You should also put Angie Stone in that category, she too is off the hook!

Greetings all!

Jill Scott is my gurl! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I love her. I have to agree with NUPE4LIFE...she is definitely a refreshing addition to the R&B scene. She incorporates not only R&B into her sound, but also jazz, hip hop, poetry, spoken word...she's fabulous!

"Gettin in the Way" is one of my favorite songs on the CD [I get my quote from that song! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif]...but the whole CD is wonderful. Please drop by your local music store and pick it up. If they don't have it, make them order it!

Peace Love and Progression

AKA2D, I have Angie Stone's "Black Diamond" also. And I can't wait for Erykah Badu's "Mama's Gun". "Bag Lady" is the jam of the summer. Also, OutKast's "Stakonia" will be dropping in October as well. They are one group, who's albums get better and better. B.O.B (Bombs Over Bagdad) is the first single off the new album. It took me like two listens to like the song, but I like it. The fall music scene looks HOT! In the word of Lil' Wayne, "THE BLOCK IS HOT!"

Hey Ladies and Gentlemen:

I agree with Brand Nubian and NUPE4LIFE...Jill Scott is definitely a refreshing addition to today's music scene.

She wrote songs for Ericka Badhu (specifically the one she does with The Roots) and she fuses many different styles and genres of music it's amazing.

Brand Nubian I KNEW you were down when I read a post by you and the end read "Queens shouldn't swing...if you know what I mean."

Jill Scott is the BOMB.
I saw her live in Los Angeles at the Velvet Room along with King Brit. This was before her CD was out. She is BOMB live and her CD is the BOMB. "Long Walk" is by far the best track on the CD.

I love POSITIVE Black peoples.

PEACE!!!

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Girl, "Queens shouldn't swing...." has become one of my personal mottoes. Jill is just downright inspirational, especially if you like good music and you are poet. Listening to her made me sit down and drop some serious lyrics of my own.

I love "Long Walk" but my faves are "Gettin in the Way," "Honey Molasses," "Love Rain" and definitely "He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)" - reminds me of my sweetie. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif

Two thumbs up on Jill Scott. I have not heard the CD yet, but I absoluely fell in love with the video for "Getting In the Way". I love her attitude. I will look out for the CD in stores.

Jill has been added into the Common-Minnie Riperton-Jamariquai-disco-Blondie-Wu Tang rotation around my house, and that's saying something!

"Long Walk" is the stuff, as is "He Loves Me," "Slowly Surely," "One is the Magic #," and of course, "Gettin' in the Way." And I absolutely LOVE The Roots interlude-"what's ya NAME girlfriend, what's ya NAME?"

Btw, Soror Stephanie Renee (the poet mentioned in the Skeephi.com soaps) does background vocals on "Jilltro," and has been hyping Jill forever. Check out Soror Stephanie's site: www.creators-child.com. I bought my Jill CD from there and got a discount.

Sorry for the book-yall got me excited!

DG:

Thanks for the hookup on that website. Whoo-wee, I forwarded it to all my friends who like music "different" from the mainstream BS that gets constant rotation.

Thank you again.

PEACE

"Who Is Jill Scott?" is the most refreshing album I've heard all year! If you want to check out the entire album, log on to BET.com and click on Music. There is a section with Listening Parties where you can listen to the entire album.

Discogoddess:

Ooh..thanx for the info on the woman who does the background vocals on "Jilltro." I was wondering about that.

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif And that Roots interlude is one of my favorites too.

Hello lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

I already have Who Is Jill Scott. They are playing the hell out of "Gettin in the Way" on the radio, and rightly so. I love #4, 5, 6 and 17. Sorry, I don't know the names of the songs off the top of my head. Also, if you are feeling Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone,D'Angelo, Common etc. you will want to give a listen to The Phat Cat Players. I am loving "Sundress".

Peace and Blessings everyone!

AKA2D '91 09-15-2000 04:25 PM

I like Sundress, too! It isn't in heavy rotation down here anymore...that was earlier this summer.

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE LUCY PEARL CD? Dawn was my FAVORITE member of En Vogue...that new song "Don't Mess With My Man" is on point!
Just curious....
