Tri Delta Closes Bucknell Chapter - Risk Management Problems
 

More depressing news for Bucknell Greeks (see also the thread "DU chapter suspended/now inactive" started by g41965) --

An Associated Press article posted on a TV station's web site (WGAL Channel 8) reports that Delta Delta Delta has withdrawn the charter of the Bucknell chapter for serious risk management problems (no real details on the problems).

The aricle indicates that Tri Delta (and DU, too) might be able to return to Bucknell in 2006.

First AOPi at AL and now DDD at Buckn.

These sororities are getting to be like hazing fraternities.

Hank Nuwer may have another book about this in the works.

All I know is what is in the AP report. That news story makes no link between the two actions; Bucknell closed DU, while in contrast Tri Delta HQ notified the university that the Bucknell chapter's charter had been withdrawn.

Incidentally, the Delta Delta Delta chapter was founded at Bucknell in 1904. I'd venutre to say that the situation must have been quite serious for their HQ to pull the charter of a 99-year-old chapter at a fairly prestigious college.

Sad for both DU and Tri Delta.

For some reason, I'm thinking they have not been 99 years continuous and had a fairly lenghtly break...but don't quote me on that. DDD lists all chapters and closures on their national site but for now Bucknell is not there at all (probably till they fix/eliminate the web link) so I couldn't check.

Tau Chapter of Delta Delta Delta at Bucknell University

One of my dearest friends (whom I have mentioned before on GC) was a Pi Phi at Bucknell in the late 80s-early 90s. She preffed Pi Phi and Tri Delta, and is still close to a few Bucknell Tri Delta's maybe I can find out what happened.

Last year the Tau chapter won the Philanthropy Program Award and the Educational Programming Award. They have 108 members, always make quota (you do not rush at Bucknell untill the fall of your Sophomore year) and I do not think they ever left campus for any reason. They have been a very strong presence at Bucknell and considered a "Top Chapter" for MANY years. Above is a link to their website, it is still up and running. I hate to assume, but I can only guess it was BAD for them to get their charter pulled by nationals.

From what I've heard, Tri Delta's been cracking down hard on risk management violations lately, so this isn't too surprising.

Not to get to defensive in this post, but...:rolleyes:

Problems with risk management does not equal hazing. Hazing is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to violating risk manangement policies. Sororties, in my experience, tend to have strict laws that are intensely inforced when compared to mens' fraternities.

And the consequences tend to be alot more severe.

For example, if hypothetical fraternity AB has had troubles with risk management in the past. AB sends its new members out on a scavenger hunt. AB Nationals finds out, if they even care, they might get fined or at worst probation. No one was hurt, they can keep their chapter.

If hypothetical sorority KXZ has had troubles with risk manangement in the past. KXZ sends out its new members on a scavenger hunt. KXZ Nationals find out & NPC finds out as well. These girls are done. At best, probation and a fine. At worst.....well you know the rest.

I think too that it might be that Bucknell in general is being considered a RM risk. IE if they were at a school where there have been no RM problems with the Greeks, wonderful town/gown relations, they might be more likely to get probation. Unfortunately, that ain't Bucknell.

Well, then...I wonder if all the GLOs nat'ls have their eyes on my school, University of Wisconsin.

We hold the number 2 rank as biggest party school, 1# for drinkers of beer, 1# for drinkers of hard liquior, and #4 for pot smoking. (According to the Princeton Review people)

Just the kind of place every GLO wants a chapter.

Bucknell is a huge party school in that area. We used to go up there to party, and we had mixers with their fraternities at their houses...and not just a couple kegs, but tons of liquor, etc. They hazed pretty badly as well. Risk Management violations at this school aren't surprising, nor are they new.

Not to mention a lot of fraternity hazing issues.

But I think that the UW gets help from the fact that a lot of sororities like having chapters at Big 10/Big 12/SEC/Pac 10/Ivy schools. Especially the Big 10 and the SEC and the Ivy League, from what I've seen.

National HQs, for better or for worse, will cut a lot more slack for a school at Wisconsin than for one at, say UW-Platteville. What can get a chapter at Bucknell closed down might only get a chapter at Princeton or Bama a couple semesters of probation.

I think that also (theoretically) it's easier to turn a chapter around at a school of 35,000 than a school of 3,000 or so.
