Cal - Riverside

Hello Brothers,

Im from the UC Riverside chapter (Delta Nu) and I needed advice on some issues that I dont know how to deal with...

1) How do you guys deal with people who hold your chapter "hostage?" e.g. "Well if we dont start doing stuff, Im going to quit.."

2) If you suspect an AM knows something about the ritual...how do you go about addressing him without revealing, or confirming, or denying anything?

3) What are some good brotherhood activities? Other than BBQs, and sports?

4) What are some good social themes?

5) At our school, its pretty weird. KA Order is top house, next would be ATO, then Delts. They all have 50+ guys. It seems like whatever we do or however hard we try, we never seem to get past 35. Right now we have 24. Personally I dont care about numbers, i care about brothers...but we lose a lot of quality guys to Phi Kappa Sigma, and Delta Tau Delta. It seems like all these guys advertise is "partying drinking, etc etc." One of ATO's rush slogan is "Rush ATO - Get Laid." How do you compete with that without biting their style. I believe Lambda Chi has a lot to offer and it seems senseless to say something like "Rush Lambda Chi and we'll get you laid" or some bullcrap like that. So basically what I want to know is, how do you compete with those types of fraternities? Is there anything we are doing wrong with rush?

6) I need some good Pre-Initation ideas...SOON...so if someone can please PM me with some VERY GOOD ideas...please let me know.

Ill have more questions but this is all i can think of right now. Thanks for your help and your time.

always in ZAX,

What is hold your Chapter Hostage??

Dont do what??

Bro, a lot of people may think they know about our Ritual, they dont. Maybe a bit and peice. But the main thing, it is to my Knowledge and Idea the Finest Ritual in History for Greek Organizations. Just as Our Coat of Arms is.

Most have no real clue about how great it is and how profound it really is!

No matter how many times I see it, I still Cry and the Hair stands up on the back of My Neck!

Now, How to Sell LXA:

First to Drop Pledgeship and go to Associat Members.
George S and I argued about this till 4;30 in the Morning! He won of course.
First to have in Our Consitution No Hazing.
First having All Members involved in the process of running the Zeta.

My Problem is, I have been so far removed from the daily workings, I cannot give a definitive answer.

How much better is what I said above, We have the Most Herelaldic Coat of Arms of any Greek Organization.

We do not Haze.
The New Members can be instrumental of guiding The Chapter.

We have always Professed to Brothers for Life not just College Years.

One of the Largest, with one of the Largest Alumni Bases, one of the finest Hdq, and well staffed Fraternitys in Greekdom!

A harsh hazing Poloicy in place.

Pre-Initiation ideas, that throws me! I cannot and will not comment.

Why, I was never an Officer Of My Fraternity of LXA, never on the Ritual Team, Never went through Recruitment.

But I am a Brother as You can see!

Have been doing it for 38 years! Tell that story.

A Brother of LXA who beleives to this day. along with so many others on this Site!

Damn do I go on!

LCA AZ 1243 12-08-2003 09:03 PM

some advice on competition:
DON"T COMPETE
LCA does not have to compete. Some of the shirts that I have seen (and some I own) are:

Pledge with the rest or Associate with the best
Associate with excellence
We are who you pretend to be (my personal favorite)
LCA its not for everyone but thats the beauty of it.
Friends come and go but family is for life

Try and show that you arent just about getting laid and that your chapter is more than that. Any guy can join a FRAT (we are a Fraternity some are frats) to get drunk or get laid.

Show that you guys are better than that. Show that you guys do the most work and get the most done and have the most fun doing it.

Your chapter wont get the crazy party animals, but you will get the guys who want to accomplish things and if you guys do it right you might just get some guys who never even knew they wanted to be greek and those guys will be the ones that change your chapter for the best (just ask the Northeast Conclave SAC member from my chapter).

As for the Pre-I events I dont know the whole PM thing and I dont have the time right now to figure it out so just email me at jschum@bu.edu

If you want to talk pre I you can pm me. I'm my chapter's phi. As far as rush goes we're having a slogan this year that is "Rush LCA, or put on a dress and join a sorority" which i like.
Look to INTs new "The Great Passage" for some rush help to. I can put you in contact with our HA who was our HD before also if you'd like. Let me know

re: Rush

I agree with the "don't compete" suggestion.

When starting the colony at Vanderbilt, we were in much the
same situation (not to mention we were the only group on
campus that didn't have a house at the time).

When the rushee groups came around during formal rush,
our message to them was "if you're just looking for parties,
just looking for sex, or looking to get hazed, go elsewhere...
we dont' want you here." If a college guy needs a frat to
get drunk or get laid these days, he's pretty sorry.

Then emphasize what you are about: no hazing, brotherhood,
and commitment to ideals. This will drive away most rushees,
but good riddance.

Instead, take Theta Kappa Nu's old rush technique...comb
through campus for guys who don't go thru rush...who think
frats are stupid because they're all about booze and women.
Sometimes anti-frat freshman make the best Lambda Chi
brothers, and go on to make fantastic alumni.

Of course, this only works if your current actives truly
believe it, and are willing to do the extra work to find
the "diamonds in the rough" amongst the anti-greek
freshmen.

Good luck,
in ZAX,

K Joiner

K J, from one ole Fart to another, YES!

We at LX Z are in the position of not having a House for the first time in 37 years as we demolished it for safety reason. The Brothers were more important.

Now everyone thinks since We do not have a House (Building) We stand no chance.

That is not selling LXA and The Brothers of LXA!

It is just a thin layer of icing on the cake of what We All Have!

That is the important sell and what needs to be promoted, what LXA is and what it can mean to you!:)

SniffDNZ098 12-09-2003 06:11 PM

As viewing much of the same stuff as Brother Aphrodelik96 here at UCR, California seems to have the typical stereotypical fraternity/sorority mentality from watching shows like greek life and stuff like that.

Most of California's mentality when it comes to fraternities is drinking, keggers, getting laid etc. Very sad :(

Tom Earp 12-09-2003 07:22 PM

Bro Sniff Dawg, what do you expect in Cal?

Hey Bro., come to Kansas Where We all know the Asswholes are Crooks, oh I mean the Poloticians!

OK that vent is over!:)

Now the problem is how to promote LXA is not driven by getting laid and getting drunk!

While We have some of the Greatest Tools to promote LXA, it seems as I am sure that you know, the new Frosh come to college to F88K and drink until they find out OOPS, this is trying to Graduate!

Hey PM your phone #, Will give you a call!

Always love to talk to My New Just Met Brothers!:)

re: new frosh

I have to disagree a bit with the comment on what new
frosh do when they come to college.

Yes, there are many frosh who show up and party all year...
usually they are not back for their sophomore year...
there is still a pretty high freshman drop out rate.
We wouldn't want those guys as brothers anyway...
there's always a chance they'll straighten up, study
and graduate...but not likely if they are "hard core"
partiers their first year.

Secondly, the "party till you drop" attitude/expectation
amongst freshmen and college students in general has
dropped DRAMATICALLY the past five years (most
frosh across the country now take a national survey
during orientation week...used to track all kinds of
statistical trends for college frosh for several
decades).

Not coincidentally, the percentage of frosh who say
they're interested in going Greek has dropped by
almost half in the past 5 years.

Fraternities are going to have to define themselves as
something other than drinking/partying clubs, or they
will go out of business....students today are much more
aware of what's going on and their futures....financial
aid is harder to get while college costs are skyrocketing...
frivolity is on the downslope...hopefully the Greek system
isn't as well.

I wish I could offer a "silver bullet," but I can't...each chapter
will have to decide what kind of chapter it wants to be....
some would rather close down than drop the "party till
you drop" mentality...and on some campuses, they will
survive. Other chapters will have to find out how they
can define themselves to be "marketable" to the
new generation of students....could be challenging,
but I think Lambda Chi is up to it. We survived depression,
war, the anti-establishment age of aquarius, and the
party till you puke 80's and early 90's...I think we'll find
a way to continue.

Just my 2 cc
