self-respect & strolling...
 

Just wondering what you guys thought about this. I've seen it at every party I've attended this year - the DJ puts on something completely disrespectful to women like "Freak H*es" or whatever that nasty crap is that talks about who needs some "d*ck in [their] life"... and the sorority girls are steady strolling. I've noticed only one group at my particular school that doesn't stroll to these kinds of songs.. the rest get all into it. Is it silly of me to think this is a little bit wrong? Just curious as to what you guys think about it.

Maybe I'm not that hip to the game, but what is "strolling"?

When I was an undergrad, we had an unwritten rule which stipulated that we NEVER, EVER step/stroll to vulgar, anti-woman songs. It was hard, especially when roadtripping and visiting with sorors from chapters who saw nothing wrong with that behavior, but I was like, how can we be so pro-sisterhood, require ladylike mannerisms from our membership, yet disrespect our OWN selves by strolling to some old "B$%@!* Betta Have My Money" or whatever (yes, I'm showing my age)????

If I were to see my sorors doing that at a party now, I would gently ask them to cease and desist, with a full explanation as to why.

My undergrad chapter did the same thing including the music we used for probate, stepshows, party walks or "strolling", etc.

Actually, I kinda agree. In a certain way, if a group steps to this kinda music, it does send a message to people, huh?

Back in the day, when I use to step, stroll, and bop (retired stroller and Kanemaster, of course) to music of that nature, sure, I was qouting the lyrics some times; but I enjoyed the fellowship and just kickin it with brothers more than the song itself. Although there are more positive songs that people can step to, nothing gets a krowd HYPE like a good all profane, ghetto or thug, and unfortunately, sometimes negative and disrespective song.

I don't go to "frat parties" at my school, but I have attended a few events where they played music to entertain the crowd. My school is pretty conservative and they tend not to play highly offensive music. You won't hear Trina and the like unless it's the instrumental version.

Sometimes the members here have been "caught". They might be strolling to something mild and then they switch up the song to "Suck my D'ck". Whether they stop or not depends on the people that are strolling at the time.

Truly, I think that misogynistic music should not be embraced by the masses of women. While the commentary may be true of the men that these performers are acquainted with, no self respecting woman should embrace the lyrics by dancing nor strolling to it.

Whenever songs like ___ Betta have my money, Gangsta B___, etc. would come on when I was a partying gal, I would not even entertain the thought of dancing. The beat may have been nice, but by dancing to it, I would signal that I embraced this form of verbal abuse.

I think that the question you've posed is a good one. I have noticed Greeks and non-Greeks alike dancing when these songs come on..and I've often wondered if they understood the condoning message they were sending. What ever happened to our social conscience?

I am still a neo and at our first stroll practice we were told that we do NOT stroll to songs that are degrading to women. Sometimes that is really hard when you are at a party and it seems like that is all that is being played.

BUT what is the saying ... now that you know what's right and what is wrong ....

really I don't know the saying, but still trying to make a point here.

On the same subject, has anyone noticed lately that that is all that is played at most parties. I rarely hear any "nice" songs anymore, or at least radio versions.....some of that music is just outrageous, I didn't know you could put 8 curse words in a 9 word sentence until now.

See now, that just proves Steve Harvey's point in the "Original Kings of Comedy"...songs just don't talk about love anymore. I totally agree. Either it's highly suggestive or mysoginistic in nature. It's totally out of control.

Hmmm...it seems like we are of two minds, ladies! My observation has been that a lot of these songs in fact are quite popular with the ladies, based on the responses in the "...Latest Dances" thread on this board. Is it me, or are we women crying a little wolf by getting in a lather about certain songs in this thread, but yet reveling in the dances we did/do to "Pimp Daddy" "Doo Doo Brown" and the like on another thread?

The "artists" create this stuff and the DJs play it cuz they know people (ESPECIALLY women) will shake their @#%es to it!

Maybe I just don't get it...
