Culture Wars

The FCC has recently ruled that saying the "F" word in primetime over the airwaves is okay as long as there is no sexual connotation to it.

With this and certain recent court rulings, the promulgation of MTV/BET, the glorification of materialism, misogyny, nihilism, violence, and moral relatavism, what is your view of American culture and where it is headed? I prefer this not be a religious debate (see gay marriage thread). With that being said, can one be a libertarian for the good without allowing all of the bad?

I thought about this today. Things are going to far. I'm not a prude, but I believe that general censorship in the media is good for the children. I have seen the behavior of youth deteriorate as our forms of entertainment have become more permissive. In short, I believe enough is enough...and this is too much.

I know that they won't be throwing the F-bomb around casually, but anything that can be pushed to the limits will be. Is anyone here cognizant of what they watch around a child? Watch any show at 8 pm and notice the many sexual situations and adult conversation, even the so called family shows are too much.

Society suffers from the disease of gradualism. Leaving aside the "values" aspect of it, anything goes it seems. A nursing prof once gave me this analogy. She said if you drop a frog in a container of boiling water, obviously its system will shock. But if you took a frog placed it in a container of room-temperature water and then slowly turned that water on boil, the frog would not try to escape. Assuming the analogy's validity, it's on point; it mirrors what we see societally.

DStyle82, yeah, I find myself censoring or changing channels when my children are present, and the radio too.

The "F" word makes me cringe when I hear it anyway. But to answer your question, I work for the ACLU of Minnesota and that is one of the biggest conflicts I have. I believe in protecting free speech, but I have a hard time reconciling that with speech that is hatefulor unduly offensive. I would be interested in seeing what others say about this.

[HIJACK] Hey Doggy! It's been a while...good to hear from you![/HIJACK]

I think being able to use this word is a terrible move. My goodness, what's going to happen when I have children?! There's soo much on the television right now that I don't even want to watch (mind you, that's before 10 PM).

I'm more concerned about the impact this will have on our children today. As adults we have to really set the example for our youth. As ladygreek said, using that word makes me cringe too, so I would really hate to see it being used loosely on regular TV. Again I ask, what is the world coming to?
