MEMBERSHIP QUESTION?
 

Hello sisterfriends and ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I have a question. I attend an adult continuing education program. It's for adults over 25 that are returning to college to get an undergraduate degree. There isn't an AKA chapter or any organizations on our campus. Is there still any possiblity of me trying to gain membership as an undergrad? I have checked for an answer, but I can't seem to find one or perhaps I have overlooked it. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your quick response Idea08. That was the first place I checked. "Please be advised that to become an undergraduate member of the Sorority, you must be matriculating full time, at an accredited two, three, or four year senior college or university. After completing at least one grading period at that school, you must also attain a cumulative and semester average of C+." Okay, maybe I'm just "duuuuuh" today, but I still don't understand what I can do since my school is non-traditional. A friend of mine who is not a member said that perhaps I can try to gain membership at a chapter at another school. Is this possible? I hope I'm not being bothersome.

You will have to arrange a contract between your university and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The idea is the school has legalities that it must fall under in order for outside organizations to affiliate with its students and student affairs office.

If you are going to a continuing educational institution where your are paying full fees, i.e. $7000 plus, your school will probably not allow you to develop a contract with my Sorority. I already know that "Phoenix University"--not the one in Arizona, but all over the place like "National University" will not allow such contracts. That is just the way it is with these types of schools...

When you mentioned "Phoenix University", does that include University of Phoenix Online as well? I was contemplating taking graduate courses there to get a Masters (I have a young daughter, so getting a Masters the traditional way may be a bit of a struggle). I am also interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on the graduate level. What are the Sorority's views on such issues?

Please do a search on this board. You may find your answers for which you seek.

If you have researched your question and still don't have a correct answer, your best bet is to contact the sorority, via the corporate headquarters and/or the Regional Director in your area.
