Sheffield reportedly to accept 3-year deal with the Yankers
 

Gary Sheffield has decided to accept the Yankees' three-year contract offer for between $36 million and $38 million, sources close to the free-agent outfielder have told ESPN's Peter Gammons.

Sheffield did not finalize details of the deal with George Steinbrenner on Saturday; the Yankees principal owner was at a Tampa, Fla., hospital with longtime Yankee assistant Billy Connors, who suffered a heart attack Friday and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. But Sheffield has told friends the deal is done, Gammons reports.

After Curt Schilling sign with the Red Sox, I figured the yankees were going after A power hitter.

Again, though, who's going to "peech" for them? Mike Mussina is brass. But Jose Contreras? Jeff Weaver? :eek: They need Bartolo Colon and to keep Andy Pettitte.

Well today they traded for Vazquez. Gave up Nick Johnson, who I'm still convinced can become a hell of a hitter (although injury problems could get in the way). He's a very good fielder, so being in the NL will be good. As far as Rivera and Choate, no big losses there, although Rivera is a very nice guy in person (not that that matters at all).

Don't think they're going to go after Colon now, but I expect them to get Pettitte. Hopefully they can get rid of Weaver's contract.

It's a great thing when the Yankees/Sox rivalry spills over into the postseason. I don't think the rivalry has been this red hot since the 70s. It's a wonderful thing for baseball.

I heard the Yankees are trying to negoiate a new contract with Pettitte. Jeff Weaver was a Big Bust, In my Opinion. He hasn't really done anything for the team. Bartolo Colon wants to remain with the White Sox. I will agree that the Yankees/Red Sox Rivalry has intensified, especially after the ALCS. This coming season should be Interesting.:cool:

Don't rule Colon out yet, if he wanted to stay in Chicago he would have accepted their money.

This is just my opinion of course but does anyone else think that Weaver didn't like pitching when people notice? He pitched great in Detroit but no one cared since it was only the tigers. He needs to go to a team like the brewers where he can pitch in anonymity again.

If Vasquez can handle pitching in N.Y., that's a good trade. Hopefully he doesn't end up being like Ed Whitson. :eek:
I do like Nick Johnson (who is Phillies manager Larry Bowa's nephew, BTW) although he's a little short on the power at a power position. Sort of Mark Grace-esque.

I'm thinking the same thing. Maybe the pressure of pitching for a team like the yankees got to him.

I'm thinking Johnson could end up like a Don Mattingly (my favorite athlete ever) type of player. Mattingly didn't show much power in the minors, or in his first couple of seasons, but ended up being a 30+ home run guy for a few years. Johnson could end up being like that, but if he ends up like Grace he'll have one hell of a year career.

I think it's safe to say Weaver could be compared to Ed Whitson (except without the punching the manager episode - Whitson's fight with Billy Martin may be one of the top ten Yankee moments ever). You could also point to Kenny Rogers, an otherwise solid pitcher who blew it in NY.

I give you big-time credit for the Whitson reference though; pitiful part of Yankee history when Steinbrenner was at his worst (also see Steve Kemp, Dave Collins and the 1982 season).

I'd forgot about Eddie Lee from Tennessee fighting with Alfred Manuel "Billy" Martin back in the day. I've followed baseball since 1977, so I remember when George was at his worst.

Did anyone hear about the A-Rod/Nomar deal being discussed right now?

I've heard about the three-way deal that also involves ManRam to Texas, although they need pitching more than a big bat. There's lots of talk about Nomar, a native SoCal, coming to the Angels or the Dodgers. I'm wondering, if this deal comes down, what happens to Miggie Tejada.

I'm hoping Miguel Tejada will remain a Oakland A's. He's the most important piece right now for them. Manny Ramirez would be a nice fit in the Texas line-up, But it wouldn't help them anyway. If John Hart can somehow unload A-Rod's Contract, I'll be surprised. As for Nomar, He would be a great addition to the Dodgers.
