Pro-Greek Laws
 

Hi,

I wondered if we could come up with a list of the pro-greek laws?
By this I mean laws which specifically make it easier for Greek letter organisations to develop and survive, in the United States. If poss, it'd be interesting to see each of these with a v. brief description of how they help. I'll start with some of what I've heard and if people can fill in the blanks and correct any misconceptions about the ones I mention that'd be great.

'Title IX' part of the US Education Act (?).
It required single-sex professional fraternities to go co-ed. And allows student groups designated as "social" to 'discriminate' for membership on grounds of gender. I.e be all male/all female.

Freedom of Association Act 1996
Don't know much about this. Anyone? How does it extend the First Amendment of the Constitution to help greek orgs even more?

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (known as FERPA or Bucklaw Amendment)
Means student educational records are considered confidential. Under most circumstances the records will not be released without their written and signed consent. This means that greeks can sign a consent form so their org can then get their results to check GPA etc and monitor academics. Without this (i.e if the law didn't exist and data protection rules forbade giving out results to anyone but the student), it would be more difficult to for greek orgs to function in their academic capacity.

Yes, We are in the Minority, We as Greeks do more not only in College, but In real Life!:)

Freedom of Association
 

Freedom of Association, as derived from the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution does just that. There was a famous court case, between Purdue University and Sigma Chi Fraternity, that went before the Indiana Supreme Court.
