GLO Total???

Okay, I've searched on gc how total is met and etc, but I'm still confused. How do you know what total is? They set total at formal recruitment time? Below are the houses, in no particular order, current numbers according to the greek affairs webpage at my college. I'm trying to judge what is total? B/c I think the houses with larger numbers, am I correct on this, are houses that had a larger return rate and met quota? Sorry, I'm just trying to figure all this out.
AAA - 185
BBB - 151
CCC - 125
DDC - 193
EEE - 155
FFF - 130
ABB - 129
BCC - 165
CDD - 70
DEE - 139
EFF - 148
FAA - 117

This list was comprised after fall '03 recruitment and updated(mid October).

Total is the maximum number of women that a chapter may have in all. Total is set by the collegiate panhellenic and is usally held at that number of several (many) years. Quota is the maximum number of women that may be pledged from formal recruitment. Quota changes yearly and is based on the number of women who participate in formal recruitment.

The catch to all this is that a chapter may always pledge quota number of women even if that will put them over total. As well, they may pledge (thru COB) more women than quota if they are under total.

Example:

Campus total is 100 and quota (this year) is 30

Chapter A returns with 80 members
pledges 30 new members (quota) from formal - chapter now has 110 and may not pledge any additional members this year (unless enough women quit to bring them below total)
pledges 25 new members (not quota) from formal - chapter now has 105 members but may pledge 5 more new members during COB to make quota

Chapter B returns with 60 members
pledges 30 new members (quota) from formal - chapter now has 90 members but because they are under total may COB 10 additional women for a total new member class of 40
pledges 25 new members (not quota) from formal - chapter now has 85 new members but again may COB 15 additional women to reach the total of 100.

Hope this helps

And just one more example:

Chapter C returns with 102 members (already over total). It pledges 30 new members in formal recruitment (quota), and now the chapter has 132 (which is 32 over "total"). This chapter cannot COB during the year (unless they lose 33 or more members).

In short, total may or may not have much relationship to average chapter size. There can be campuses where all or almost all NPC GLOs are at or even above total, and there are campuses where no chapter is at total.

Wow, that was the best, and most clear explanation i've seen of quota/total. I'm really impressed :) Good Job!

ok I have a question. Is total the same for everyone, or is each chapter have there own total set by the Panhellic Council?

Like is AAA and BBB going to both be 50 or AAA is 57 and BBB is 49?

Usually, total is the same for all chapters but I have heard of some campuses where total is based on chapter house capacity - it's pretty rare.

That only makes sense on campuses where the new members all move in immediately after bid day.

That's pretty interesting, but that's not the case on UKDaisy's campus...total is the same for every house, although I can't quite remember what it is.
