Insurance companies that cover fraternities?

Does anyone know of insurance companies that cover fraternities in the Pittsburgh area? Thank you!

i think most groups have some sort of national policy...
Welcome to GC, always good to see another Pittsburgher on here. I don't even know if there are local insurance companies that would do something like that. My guess would be no.

Kirklin & Kirklin.

FIPG (if they still exist as an entity) and LLoyd's of London (which is whom FIPG is now using) offer policies.

National offices should also be a resource for this information as well.

I agree with what's been said.

Gamma Phi Beta uses the same company for all of their chapters, MJ Insurance.

FIPG has never offered insurance products.

A: No! Despite the popular misconception, FIPG does not now nor has it ever sold or provided insurance coverage. FIPG was created in the 1990s to investigate the possibility of providing group insurance coverage for a number of fraternities. However, that effort was short-lived. FIPG has nothing to do with fraternity/sorority insurance or insurance coverage.

Q: What does FIPG do?
A: Provide risk management guidelines and educational resources to help member fraternities and sororities be more effective in their risk management policies and educational efforts.

That would explain why we haven't heard a whole lot from them in the past few years....

From what I remember, a few national GLO's pulled out of FIPG, making insurance coverage or other services non-affordable for the group.

Oh, FIPG is very much alive and kicking, they just don't provide insurance. I think the thought process for being a member group is to help member organizations structure their own risk management policies so that the organization is more attractive to insurance carriers - meaning cheaper insurance for some, for others, it may mean actually finding someone, anyone, that will provide insurance at any price.

Lambda Chi is still a member of FIPG, right?

Last I checked (it's been three years or so) - yes, LXA was still a member.

I believe that Sigma Chi and one other large national GLO did pull out of FIPG some time ago, however.

Delt is still a member, also.

While I may be mistaken, I believe the confusion begins in the fact that I think a number of the members of this group became the core of a number of fraternities who decided to "self insure," when it became too expensive or impossible to buy insurance from the regular sources.

That group chose an experienced insurance underwriter to help them manage their effort -- although not fund it --but that underwriter was not FIPG.

Any, that's my understanding of the situation.

How do i contact FIGP? Recently my fraternity was sued by an independent student who was punched by our bouncer in spring 2003 (before i was a brother). Even though we have one of the best multinational law firms representing us pro bono, we are still having trouble obtaining insurance. The event which resulted in the law suit prompted the school to look at all of the greek houses insurance policies. We found that ours has a pretty broad alcohol exclusion. Because of the lawsuit kirklin wont touch us. We need to find another carrier if we want to stay around much longer. For various reasons we havent been associated with a national for 4 years, and are chartered under a different name, although we are essentially the same fraternity we used to be (and they dont seem to mind, they get out composites in the mail every year with the seal on it and they havent said anything).
Our last option is recolonizing with a different national, which we (and our alums) would rather not do.

FIPG is for (inter)national fraternities and sororities only. Their web site is http://FIPG.org/ and they don't sell insurance.
