NCAA FB: Mike Stoops to AZ?

It's all over the radio/net over here in OKC. Mike Stoops, co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma is soon to be named the next head coach at Arizona. For those of you in Pac-10 country, what's ya'll's take on this?

I heard on the radio this AM coming into work that the UofA athletic dept. has said that the report of Stoops having signed a contract is not true and that they have interviews setup this weekend for Ricky Hunley (NFL) and Norm Chow (USC).

My opinion is that the UofA really needs someone solid with contacts and ties to the school and the west. The last thing they need is another "big name".

I actually hope you're right.

The guy's done an incredible job here in Oklahoma. He probably deserves a head coaching job at a major school. I just don't want him to leave.

AD's need to take more risks. Oklahoma ended up striking gold when it hired away Florida's old Defensive Coordinator (Bob Stoops).

Yeah, the entire state is pretty much booing the radio personalities that "broke" this story. They're the same folks that told us Stoops was going to replace Spurrier at Florida. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll lose their jobs or any sleep over this one.

I always thought a defensive head coach would be a strange selection at a PAC-10 school. Haven't AD's in that conference almost always gone with former offensive coordinators?

AT 1pm MST this afternoon the University of Arizona introduced Mike Stoops as the new head football coach. He will return to Ok. to coach in the Big 12 title game then return to Tucson on Dec. 8.

So what can you tell me about him?? What should we expect? He's got quite a job ahead of him ... the football program is
in real disarray.

Too bad Norm Chow from USC can't get a chance - with what he's done there and at BYU.

It'll be interesting to see what a defensive minded HC does in the PAC-10. Norm Chow would have just been more of the same 'ol, same 'ol. Stoops brings a different type of personality and something new for OC's to puzzle over.

I have a feeling that he'll be very successful.

Well one of the reasons that Mackovic was hired was because "everyone" was tired of Dick Tomey's defensive minded teams - aka "Desert Swarm" from the 1990's and "they" wanted "exciting" football... what they got was losing football...

So now its back to defense is the number one priority...
