LOS OLIVOS, Calif. - Investigators conducting a criminal probe swarmed Michael Jackson (news)'s Neverland Ranch on Tuesday, a sheriff's spokesman said. The purpose of the search was not disclosed.


Authorities from the Santa Barbara County sheriff's and district attorney's offices served a warrant about 8:30 a.m. as part of an "ongoing criminal investigation," Sgt. Chris Pappas said in a recorded statement on a media information line.


The district attorney's office had no comment, said legal secretary Debbie Popp.


It was not known whether Jackson or his children were at the Santa Ynez Valley property, which has its own zoo and amusement park with bumper cars, a merry-go-round and Ferris wheel.


Nearly 10 years have passed since the 45-year-old singing superstar faced a child-molestation investigation in a case that never resulted in criminal charges.


The singer who had international hits with the albums "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" (1987) and "Dangerous" (1991), saw his career begin to collapse in 1993 amid allegations he molested a boy. Jackson maintained his innocence, and charges were never filed. He reportedly paid a multimillion-dollar settlement.


Jackson is also connected to Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano, who has begun serving federal prison time for possessing illegal explosives, and is being investigated about whether he secretly taped conversations of celebrities and their lawyers.


Pellicano, 59, reportedly worked for Jackson while the singer was under investigation for child molestation in the early 1990s.


As the raid was under way, Court TV reported that the warrant was tied to allegations brought by a 12-year-old boy. That could not immediately be confirmed by The Associated Press.


Jackson's spokesman, Stuart Backerman, did not answer his cell phone and did not immediately return messages Tuesday.


In a television documentary broadcast on ABC earlier this year, Jackson said he had slept in a bed with many children. "When you say bed you're thinking sexual," the singer said. "It's not sexual, we're going to sleep. I tuck them in. ... It's very charming, it's very sweet."


The search came on the same day Epic Records released "Number Ones," a greatest hits collection featuring Jackson's new single, "One More Chance." On Nov. 26, CBS is scheduled to air a Jackson special consisting mainly of old concert footage.


Jackson has three children, and caused an international uproar last year when he displayed his baby, Prince Michael II, to fans by dangling him briefly from a fourth-floor balcony in Germany, where he had gone to accept an award.


Jackson called the incident a "terrible mistake," and Berlin authorities said the actions were not punishable.


Not much is known about Prince Michael II, whose mother has not been identified. The singer's 6-year-old son, Prince Michael I, and 5-year-old daughter, Paris, were born during his marriage to Debbie Rowe, his plastic surgeon's nurse, which ended in 1999.


He was also married to Lisa Marie Presley (news), Elvis's daughter, between 1994 and 1996.


Jackson routinely keeps the children's heads covered with cloth while escorting them in public — and he usually sports a surgical mask himself when out and about. He has said he wants to protect them from the public eye.

LOS OLIVOS, Calif. (Reuters) - Police armed with a search warrant remained at Michael Jackson (news)'s Neverland Ranch in central California into Tuesday night, and a broadcast report early on Wednesday said officers also carried an arrest warrant for the pop superstar.

"The Jacksons' family attorney has confirmed that the Santa Barbara County Sheriff has issued an arrest warrant for Michael Jackson," NBC Television reported.

Police said without elaboration that they served "a search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation."

Cable channel Court TV, which broke the story, quoted sources saying there had been a new allegation of sexual abuse brought by a 12-year-old boy against the King of Pop.

In 1994, Jackson reached a multimillion dollar out of court settlement with a 14-year-old boy who accused him of sexual molestation. No criminal charges were brought and Jackson denied any wrongdoing.

"We've seen this before; our response is 'Here we go again;' Michael has 24-hour-a-day supervision with him for the specific reason to protect him from these claims," family attorney Brian Oxman told NBC.

A news conference was scheduled for 11 a.m. PST in Santa Barbara.

Jackson, 45, was not at his ranch. His spokesman said he had been in Las Vegas for three weeks shooting a pop video.

"We cannot comment on law enforcement's investigation because we do not yet know what it is about. Michael will, as always, cooperate fully with authorities in any investigation even as it is conducted, yet again, while he is not home," said spokesman Stuart Backerman in a statement.

Jackson lashed out at the "rogues' gallery of hucksters and inside sources" who dominated the airwaves on Tuesday speculating on the investigation.

"These characters always seem to surface with a dreadful allegation just as another project, an album, a video, is being released," Jackson said in the statement.

The search warrant was executed on the day that a new greatest hits collection was released, featuring Jackson's latest single, "One More Chance."

Sheriff's deputies and officials from the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office activated the search warrant on Tuesday morning and stayed at the ranch into the night. Jackson has theme-park rides and a zoo there, which he occasionally throws open to local children.

The syndicated TV show Celebrity Justice said the search was prompted by revelations made by a 12-year-old Los Angeles boy in therapy sessions.

Celebrity Justice said the therapist felt compelled to report the information to authorities under a California law requiring health care professionals who "know or reasonably suspect" child abuse to disclose such suspicions.

Tuesday's search warrant follows a tumultuous year for Jackson, whose talents as an entertainer have been eclipsed by his bizarre personal life.

In February, he revealed in a British television documentary that he sometimes shared his Neverland bedroom with young boys. A 12-year-old cancer survivor called Gavin, spoke of his affection for Jackson and of enjoying sleepovers with the pop star at Neverland.

Jackson later complained that the documentary maker had violated his trust, adding in a statement that he had "never, and would never, treat a child inappropriately or expose them to any harm and totally refutes any suggestions to the contrary."

In November last year, Jackson stunned fans in Berlin by dangling his barefoot baby from a hotel balcony. In June, he settled a $12 million breach of contract lawsuit by his former top advisor, avoiding a trial that threatened to expose details of his financial empire.

Not to be cynical, but this kid's parents KNEW that Michael had a history of questionable relationships w/ children. Yet they still let him go spend the night at Neverland? Looks like they were looking for trouble (not to mention $40 million like the last case). Not to say he didn't do it. But common sense dictates you keep your kids way the hell away from folks like him. I don't care if he's famous or not.

And now there is an arrest warrant out for him...

This is pure crap people!!! He's not guilty. He never did anything the first time. The kid made a bunch of lies and when they stripped Michael down they didn't see what the kid said existed there. He had to pay just because the damage was done and was going to get worse if it got dragged out even if he won.

People need to leave him alone. He is the king of pop. On top of that think about what you'll do by the time you're 25 and what he did. Will you ever even compare? I know I won't. He is a good guy.

Why don't people just concentrate on Kobe and R Kelly? R Kelly who makes videos of child porn. R Kelly who marries girls that are incredibly underage and divorces them shortly after???

Shoot, there are parents out there who would lock their kids in a pirahna tank if they could get $32.98 out of the deal. Let alone all the accoutrements MJ provides.

i actually feel sorry for michael. i wonder what things would be like if he never had the allegations and he never had any surgeries. that is a nice thought cause he would be insanely popular and well liked. more so than now.

But people are mean and they have to rip on this guy. He is the king of pop and i support this monarchy.

In fact he is on the top 5 list of American brands most easily recognized. Anywhere else in the world and they'd be nicer.
