PHYSICALLY becoming like the other

Ok not to ride on the thunder of the other thread, but it got me thinking about a disturbing trend I've noticed....

Why the hell do couples start dressing alike?? I realize it's not that big of a deal but it pisses me off, especially when they're 22 years old and show up at your house wearing matching tan Merrills and black North Face fleeces. This is behavior I'd expect from cute senior citizens who have lived together their whole lives, not prep jobs from a Big 12 school.

Do they coordinate outfits? Is there some kind of a calendar distribution to match schedules?? I'm sorry but I find it really GHEY.

/rant

Aren't they embarassed to be seen in public??????????

OK sorry I'm done now.

Rio_Kohitsuji 11-17-2003 07:05 PM

I hate to admit this but TKE209 and I do this quite often... :o

But it's ALWAYS by accident! We'll show up with the same color pants with same color shirt...but it doesn't help that our GLO's share similar colors either...heh :p We've dated for over 2 years..we're on the same wavelength at times..heh

AXJules 11-17-2003 08:19 PM

Ok but that is different....I'm talking couples who think its cutesy, or do it on purpose.

Shady shady business.

I've only matched outfits three times in my life.
  • *Senior Luau (all couples did this)
    *My HS graduation party
    *Paradise Cove...another luau.

Each time the boy and I bought the matching dress and aloha shirt from Hilo Hatties (because it's the cheapest). I know, I know...it's different from what you mentioned, AXJules.

I agree. It's super GHEY.

This is so sad...but GPBoy and I had to plan to NOT dress alike. He was slightly less of a "prep job" than I am but there were so many days when we'd show up in matching outfits. We had these shirts (he copied me, I bought mine i high school) that were striped differetly but the same colors, and we'd go meet for lunch and both of us would have those on, white tee underneath, he'd have on khakis and I'd have on a khaki skirt, and sandals. His fraternity brothers used to make fun of us like crazy, and I think my sisters thought we planned it! :p

I think some of it is that people who are in a relationship for a long time tend to have a lot in common - like for us, it was khakis and blue oxford shirts. ;)

I do have a friend from high school has made her boyfriend change outfits because it didn't "match" her - that's just sick! The only time I ever asked Lee what he was wearing it was either because i didn't know what the dress was like where we were going to dinner, or I wanted to make sure his shirt coordinated with my dress for formal pictures!

After just about four years of dating Mr Munch, I can honestly say we don't dress alike AT ALL--not even as a coincidence. In fact, the first time I met his family, they thought it was funny that I was dressed in all pastels, and he had on all black. We are on the same wavelength about everything else EXCEPT for clothes. He dresses like he's in the Strokes or one of those bands.

Hahaha my favorite is the couples who walk around Stankowski together in matching running outfits. SCARY!!!

Matching only happened to me with Dave ONCE (so far anyway...yikes), I showed up to the Delt house one night wearing that super ugly pink Dirty Delt ball shirt from last year and he was wearing his cream one. Needless to say I felt like a big dork so I made him give me the cream one and he changed shirts. You had to admit man, the pink and red shirts were just NO GOOD! :D

PHYSICALLY becoming like the other

This strange phenomenon always seems to happen more often at amusement parks for some reason. That's where the match-y couples are.

That is so true, I live about 7 miles from 6 flags of Ga, and I see all they people dresses alike ( I am not talking about a group that goes there, just they same shirt or something)

but said to say my family and I do this. The other day we will all meet up at Olive Garden, not even seeing the other and we all wore Blue shirts/blouse/sweaters and black skirts/pants/jean with black shoes. It was sad. We have done the same with green or purple. Sometimes I will get dress and walk out of my room to go out with my sister and we will be wearing the same shirt but in different colours.

This is a lil different than what others have posted here...............but there was this girl that started dating this dude. The guy had this bug-eye like stare or glance at people.....was quite weird..........well after a time, his gf started doing teh bug-eye thing too..........then you'd see them both out together and they'd both do the bug eye thing...........it was pretty messed up.....

absolutuscchick 11-27-2003 03:53 PM

I was talking to someone about this concept lately and he said that his parents friends do this. They always wear purple and apparently if one of the couple doesn't match the other the person will make the other change. SOOOO Weird....but they are pretty old...

I would love to hear my boyfriend's reaction if I suggested that he dress like me. :D He's more Abercrombie, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, that sort of thing, while I have been known to shop at Salvation Army...I think he'd rather not. :p

Ok just saw this and it made me CTFU!!
The matching couples running around Stankowski scare me, because it reminds me of your twin phobia.

The Delt shirts scare me just because they were hideous.

Good call.

I've seen whole families do this, too, with all family members wearing the same hideously bright color top...but I guess it makes it harder to lose each other in the crowd? If you know that you just have to look for the group of bright orange t-shirts, you can probably keep track of each other pretty easily.

GeekyPenguin 11-29-2003 03:10 PM

Yesterday while shopping at Gurnee Mills (big outlet mall north of Chicago) I saw something even worse than matchy couples - we were in line at Ruby Tuesday's waiting for our names to be called, and there was a group of at least 8 women who were all wearing denim shirts with different color turtlenecks underneath - so they could find each other, I guess? It was a little scary.
