Question for the Deltas
Hey everyone. I have a quick question. Does anyone know the policy for Circling Out? There are 3 girls in my chapter that are seniors but are in a 5 year program. Do they have to Circle Out at the end of the year or can they stay for another year? Thanks for your help!

I think the 5th year seniors (or super seniors as we call them) have the option. I know we give the 5th years the options- check the bylaws on the deltas only side- i think its in there.

Actually, I think that Panhellenic has a law that says that you can only be a collegiate member for four years. So if they didn't join until their sophomore year, then they can stay on for a fifth year. I don't know exactly though because most girls from my chapter if they are going to stay a fifth, even if they didn't joined as a freshman, decide to graduate from the house with their class.

I think it's more common at big universities where a lot of people don't necessarily graduate in four years. At Wisconsin, the running statistic is that 75 percent of students graduate in SIX years (I assume this includes nontraditional students/part-time students but it is still somewhat frightening), so if each GLO was allowed to keep their girls for that long we'd end up with a very, very high total. |
Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm not sure if Adelphi has any rules on length of stay. None of the chapters on campus are at total. Two of the girls joined their Freshman year (Spring 01) the other joined her Sophomore year (Spring 02). The 5 year program is somethig called STEP. It's for all education majors. It basically allows ed majors to get the Bachelor's, Masters, and anything else New York State requires to be a teacher in 5 years. So technically they'll be grad students.
I think it would be beneficial to the chapter if they stay. Right now they are mostly seniors and sophomores (and freshmen in the spring). Only 2 juniors, but they just joined this semester. The sophs really aren't ready to be on their own yet. They still need some older sisters to look up to. But I guess to know for sure they should ask their Greek Advisor. Thanks again! |
From what I've read of the bylaws thus far, they should be able to remain in the chapter until they graduate as long as there is no panhellenic rule on your campus to prohibit doing so.
My chapter is having the opposite problem: we have a girl who is going to graduate a semester early and wanted to circle out with the pledge class above her. The rule in the bylaws states (from memory) that a member can't circle out until the pledge class from her freshman year circles out. |
