Alcohol Ban on College Sports Telecasts?

Do you really think Beer ads on TV Sports contribute to alcohol abuse on campus?

I think that's really reaching.

Be sure to read the very last line of the article.

well, speaking as a journalism major and former staff writer on several newspapers - we're not all boring people who make up opinions about stuff.

i do agree that many parts of journalism are in a weak state right now - but there are good writers out there.

I can't read the article. Could someone post it?

If beer ads on TV don't contribute to alcohol abuse then why do beer companies spend 3 million dollars for a 30 second ad during the Super Bowl and why do they spend billions on ads druing the year? I am sure they are not anticipating decreased sales.

Hi Max,

Sorry you can't read the article. I'm honoring John's request not to post copyrighted articles.

The jist of the article, as put forth by some congresspersons and educators is that alcohol ads during college sports telecasts contribute to underaged drinking on campus.

The last sentence I refer to points out that some very high percentage of the viewers of those telecasts are over 21 years old.

I've never done any research, but I suspect that the actual number of undergraduates watching any given program is pretty low, and that this premise is really grasping.

You're obviously correct that those ads are there to increase beer sales, but I don't think the number of underaged college student viewers is significant in the overall campus alcohol problem.

Edited to add that one of the Congresspeople is Dr. Tom Osborn, the former head football coach at Nebraska. And the percentage of viewers over the age of 21 is nearly 90 percent according to the article.

I guess you have to be an aol subscriber to read the article. Sorry.
