Black Friday
 

Has anyone heard of Black Friday? I just got an email saying that tomorrow, Friday, January 19, 2001 (eve of Bush's inauguration) is Black Friday, and non-Bush supporters are wearing all black attire to symbolize the preparation of a president they did NOT choose. What do you all think about this, could this be a waste of time or could this make a meaningful statement?

Wasn't Black Friday the event in Oklahoma where they lynched and burned down the African American community in the 1920's/30's?

Tomorrow it has been suggested that everyone wear black tomorrow to protest the newly "elected" prezodent, George W. Bush....

Yes it was; but not enough of us know/care about it.

This event took place in the Greenwood section of Tulsa, OK. It was indeed a dark day in history because the Black "Wall Street" was torched by an angry white mob over some false allegations of rape (typical http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif ).

I may take some lumps from yawl, but I personaly think that it is sort of a waste fo time.

My main focus is gearing up in our community so that we can work to register more folks, and be ready when the 2002 election comes, and make sure that the crap that went on in Fl doesn't happen again. That is what we should be concerned with. These feel good measures really don't amount to much in my humble opinion.

I remeber posting something about the Million Family March, and someone posed the question to me, how many more marches are we going to have, and what results did we get from that? I had to take a good look at that question, and I kinda felt what she was saying.

Bush already knows that we didn't want his azz, wearing black isn't going to make much difference. He will try to set us back 10 years on our agenda. My boy works at Dept. of Justice in the Civil Rights division. Some of the programs that they were planning on targeting for this year, have been put on hold becuase of Ashcroft. Everyone at Justice is walking on eggshells right now.

The best message to send to Bush is in 2002 when he has a Democratic Senate and House to deal with.

I acknowledge the fact that people want to show their disapproval, but I also feel it was a waste of time. We wear black all the time, and blacks weren't the only ones offended by the outcome of the "S"election. More than half the country voted for Gore.

I would have been more receptive to an ecomonic boycott. Maybe if we didn't spend one single dime in the United States today as a means of showing our disapporval; the new administration would have taken us a lot more seriously. It was too easy for them to look away for a day.

Serenity, I agree I think an economic boycott would make a stronger, more serious statement; when I read the email I received, I kind of had mixed thoughts about it, and was wondering what people thought.
