meetagreek.com----what would you think?

Since so many people have been mentioning it, I figure I'd go ahead and let the cat out of the bag to some degree.

For the past month I've been taking bids from developers and designers on coming up with a web site that will allow Greeks to meet each other and connect. It'll be designed, to some degree, after match.com. It takes a while for something like this to go from the drawing board to being a reality. And its not cheap, believe me. There are all sorts of things that have to be done, many of which hurt my brain just thinking about them, inorder for it to happen. However, its not just for greeks but also for non-greek college age people. It'll have chats, message boards, many forums for a specific GLO that interests you as well as profiles for you to view and tests you take to match up your interest. Its a big task. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress of it.

I'd come up w a different name, or Greek Nationals would be flooding the site. And I would not limit it to college age, as its the alums that most often have harder time meeting like minded people...

The name i used was just something to grab peoples attention to the thread....I have yet to come up with a name and have yet to work out all the specifics on who/what age group it'll be aimed at.

Is there room within the market for something this specific? Obviously there's collegeclub.com, (albeit not really a dating site exactly) for example.

cashmoney 11-05-2003 08:30 PM

Richard, there is room for everything on the net.

meetagreek.com vs collegeclub.com vs match.com vs hotornot.com etc...?

I didn't intend to be negative and dampen enthusiasm, I just wondered about market feasibility? Given the dotcom boom and bust we all saw. Those were generally business to consumer sites too.

That sounds like a really good idea. Good luck with it and keep us posted!

did you reserve a domain yet?

cashmoney 11-05-2003 08:35 PM

Well, I'm just doing it for a little extra cash. If I make back the money I put into it, I'll be satisfied.

Thats being worked on as we speak. I've also got a couple of webmasters who are anxious to get it going.

would you charge people to register or would it be ad-based revenues?

cashmoney 11-05-2003 08:42 PM

If they want to actually contact each other they'd need to buy a membership. We're thinking of having 1 week trials, 1 month meberships, 6 months memberships and year memberships. The longer membership you buy, if you did buy one, would naturally be cheaper depending on how long you want to be apart of it. However, if all you want to do is view the profiles and flirt there would be no charge. But if you want to contact someone via email or by other means, you'd need to buy one of the trial memberships. There would be no charge on becoming a member of the site inorder to just view it

That sounds realistic. As I understand most websites in that 'genre' operate on a similar model e.g. hotornot.com. mu_agd brings up a really good point, I know Yahoo moved in the last two years over from ad-based revenues. The market for those dropped (we all hate pop-ups!) so now there's premium packages etc. Adding extra features for extra $$ would keep the margins looking good.

So as I'm understanding, it's like match.com etc but geared specifically to collegiate age students unlike existing ones which are for all ages but generally cater to professional people with less time for bars and whatnot. And, you plan to innovatively offer a greek element so they can search for/specify GLOs etc?
So if I was a female and logged into it I could browse Pikes? Or as a guy I could look for ZTAs in Cali interested in whatever. Obviously the details will all come later but broadly speaking have I understood what you're planning?

cashmoney 11-05-2003 09:06 PM

Yes, you have an understanding of how it will work.

Best suggestion I have if you haven't done so already is find an attorney experienced in Intellectual Property (trademark protection law and whatnot) and set about protecting those parts of your idea that require it. But maybe that's just the lawyer2B in me speaking. :)
