Hey TX A&M Aggies - question for y'all
I'm heading down to College Station for Halloween to visit a friend and we're going to see A&M play Kansas. The only experience I've had with college football is UNLV, and although the games are great, they're certainly not to the level of school spirit that A&M has (I bought a maroon shirt expressly for the game). So here's my question, what should I expect at the game? Thanks much.

you haven't seen a Big 12 game until you've seen it at Kyle Field. Even though I love my Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare, I will say you never forget a game in College Station. The stadium almost looks like its moving when the students sing the Aggie War Hymn. Then when the cannon goes off after they score and "WHOOOOP" rings through the stadium. Also, expect the best pre-game and post-game parties ever :D

Kitso... this thread's for you! But I'll do my best as an unwashed heathen (I'm an alum of the University of Oklahoma) to explain the hallowed traditions of Aggieland:
Aggies remain standing throughout the game; the yell leaders (there are no cheerleaders at A&M) lead the crowd in various A&M cheers. Most Aggies will know what cheers they are based on certain hand signals given by the yell leaders. The 12th Man symbolically is represented by the assembled crowd of Aggie fans in Kyle Field. Wear a maroon shirt, and depending on the weather, i suggest khaki shorts. As AlphaSigOu stated, Aggie students stand throughout the entire game, except when the other team's band performs at halftime. So, i'd go with comfortable shoes. Midnight Yell is a can't miss also. The students gather at Kyle Field midnight before the game to practice the Yells that will be used the next day. If it's your first time in Aggieland, its' a must see. Don't forget to take a lighter if you're going dateless, you'll see why when you get there. I'd advise against a hat, or visor, as when you're participating in yells, the proper etiquette is to remove it. When A&M scores, and they will score a lot vs Kansas, don't be shocked to see all the Ags around you mugging down. It's a tradtion that when the Ags on the field score, the Ags in the stands do too :D One of my more favorite Ag traditions ;) Sunscreen and water(if you drink a lot the night before) is a must. Above all, just go with the flow, if you get any questions, just say that you're from out of town and it's your first Aggie game, most Ags will be more than happy to help ya with yells and the words to the fight song. After the game, you've got to hit Northgate, at least the Dixie Chicken for a bit, just to say you've been there. If it's not your style, i'd suggest getting your friends to take you to Carney's, the Blarney Stone, the Ptarmagin or The Tap. These are all bars where most of the Greeks hang out. Above all, enjoy yourself, and yell a Beat the Hell Outta KU once for me, i haven't seen Kyle since sept and i'm going through withdrawls :D Kitso KS 361 days i've waited for a thread like this on GC, and it's about time you hosers gave me one :D |
I read through the reply's quickly so if I missed this one point forgive me, but you also should take a small white towel. We twirl it in the air during the game-there will be towels with "Texas A&M" at all the bookstores specifically for this practice.
Have fun and stay safe:) AND GO AGS!!!! |
Anything else you got to add, Aggies? :)
Thanks for all the info Aggies. Anything else you got to add, please feel free. I'm heading down there to see a 'friend' so I don't think I'll have an issue with the lighter at Midnight Yell or 'mugging' during the game. Hitting the bars sounds great, Kitso, but I just turned 20 on Sunday so that's probably not gonna happen. And my friend and his friends are GDI so I dunno how comfortable he'd be with the idea of going into a pretty much Greek run place. Anyway, thanks again y'all, and if you got more, keep it coming. :)

Northgate....*sniffff* waaaaaaa!!! I wanna go!!!
Oh, you might hear Dixie Chicken referred to as just the Chicken, and The Ptarmagin as P-Tar or Dirty Bird (its a hole in the wall so don't be scared!). Is Shadow Canyon still there is no? They had karaoke there in Wed nights and it sure was hilarious :) Patagonias isn't there anymore, that was one of my favorites - it was Soho lounge or something stupid last time I was there boo hoo on that. The Tap is a must for sure - Pat Green used to play there before he became a bigtime singer. There is a club over in that same center and I for the life of my can't remember what its called - if its even still there! I do remember getting sick from all the tin foil crap on the walls with the lasers bouncing off of them.....woooo lot going on in there. Oh, behind the tap a couple of blocks is greek row if you wanted to see the houses :) P.O.E.T.S is a billiards place that was a good place to hang out too when I was there - but you have to like pool. I'm probably naming places that aren't even there anymore! They won't let you live the city limits until you can sing at least one Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Merle Haggard, David Allen Coe, and/or Willie Nelson song :D I can suggest some great ones if you like. Also, I don't think you'll have a problem with the age thing, if you are with 21 and up usually they'll mark you as such - just be smart. Not condoning underage drinking! Keep in mind though you won't have to drink to have fun down there - just relax, kick back and take it all in. man I'm so very homesick now...... |
please go to Midnight Yell
it is so fun |
