NYU student dies in plunge By MELISSA GRACE DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER A 19-year-old New York University student plunged from a friend's sixth-floor window in Manhattan last night in an apparent suicide, cops said. The incident marked the third reported suicide by an NYU student this fall. The sophomore from Brooklyn went out a window at another student's apartment at 1 University Place, a residential building owned by the university, at 10 p.m., police said. The student, whose name was not immediately released, suffered head injuries. She was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead early this morning, cops said. A university spokesman did not return a call seeking comment. Two other NYU students killed themselves by jumping into the atrium of the school's Elmer Bobst Library. A 20-year-old from Evanston, Ill., leaped 10 floors to his death Sept. 12. On Oct. 10, an 18-year-old freshman from Dayton, Ohio, climbed over the same 10th-floor ledge and plunged to his death. Yeah I heard about it on the radio today... I had the same reaction, WTF?! But who knows what these kids' past histories are like.

The local news report indicated that they hadn't ruled this death a suicide yet. NYU isn't commenting so far. I found out that there was a suicide and an attempt at my college this semester, too. It is all so sad. :(

When I was in junior high we a few suicides happened all around the same time (including my best friend). First off were two girls who had graduated that year and soon after starting high school both killed themselves and then a couple months later my best friend Lealand did.
I was told by the counselors then that they were bringing in extra counselors because once one student tries suicide more may try it. They're not sure why. other then that maybe it presented an option to other people who having something wrong and it seems like the only way out/stop the pain. I truly feel for all the friends and family of the suicide victims. Many if not all may now try to blame themselves thinking if only I had returned their call, if only I had listened more, if only..... It took me a long time to realize that there really wasn't anything I could have done as hard as that is to believe. |
