LSU student falls from fraternity house, dies

By The Associated Press
A sophomore from Lacombe fell from a fraternity house and died this week, Louisiana State University officials said today.
Jason Paul Whittle, 18, fell about 6 p.m. Wednesday, said Robert Anderson, an LSU spokesman. He fell onto his head from the Acacia House, said Gene Sands, another LSU spokesman.

It happened less than a week after another LSU student, 19-year-old Corey Domingue of Franklin, drank a bottle of rum and died. Domingue was studying and drinking with friends Thursday night; he died Friday morning.

"The LSU community is shocked and devastated to learn that we have lost another of our students, Jason Paul Whittle, to an incomprehensible accident," Chancellor Mark Emmert said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Whittle family and we join them in grieving the loss of Jason.

"As the University community mourns the tragic deaths of two of our students, I take this opportunity to urgently remind students to act responsibly, to look out for one another, and to do all in their power to prevent such tragedies from occurring again."

You are right, this was such a tragic accident. I know the Acacia brothers must be in a state of shock right now, along with his family, as is the LSU community.

Here's an excerpt from WAFB.

LSU Student Falls Onto Head From Fraternity House, Dies

The LSU community is mourning the death of another one of it's students within a week. An LSU spokesman says the 19-year-old student who allegedly fell off a zip line at his fraternity house died Friday morning at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. LSU officials say Jason Whittle was taken off life support at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning and died six hours later.

Whittle was the second LSU student to die in a week. Last Friday, 19-year-old Corey Domingue of Franklin, died after drinking an entire bottle of rum while studying with friends. His blood alcohol was above 0.4.

LSU police say Whittle, a second year-public administration major, hit his head Wednesday night after falling off what they call a zip line. -- That's a rope connected to the Acacia fraternity house and tied to a tree for students to slide down. Whittle's fraternity brothers refused to speak with the media, but LSU officials say they're taking Whittle's death hard.

"They are in great mourning. They are grieving. These are young people who are experiencing the death of a very close friend and brother in the fraternity. It is a horrible experience for them to go through," Gene Whittle, with University Relations.

LSU Chancellor Mark Emmertt released this statement, "The LSU community is shocked and devastated to learn that we have lost another of our students, Jason Paul Whittle, to an incomprehensible accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Whittle family, and we join them in grieving the loss of Jason."

LSU police say they are still investigating this case. They say they don't know if alcohol was a factor.
