First day substitute teaching...

So I get a call this morning and it looks like I'll be substituting Middle School PE.

Yup.... wish me luck ya'll.

Kitso, I may have a new appreciation for what you do come about 2:30 this afternoon:D

I'm considering substitute teaching next semester so don't scare me too much with your recap! :)

Hope all went well (although I think middle school aged kids are one scary species!)

Ok, I've been thinking about getting into teaching - I have a degree in English - can anyone give me some pointers?

*Not trying to hijack your thread. I figured you may know since you're substitute teaching right now.

Subbing's not too bad. I suggest kickball or basketball or something easy.

It's when you're a full time teacher with goals and other objectives you want to accomplish that it gets tough. I'm also in an area where these kids grow up playing basketball and nothing else, so i'm trying to introduce them to other sports.

I'm not going to get into some of the other psychological and behaviorial differences that come with teaching on the Rez, as opposed to teaching in a middle school like the one i went to. But, good luck my friend!

KS 361 minutes to relax today, because the middle schoolers have no classes

I'm on lunch right now.. Yeah.. so far this job is cake.

I basically sat there and watched them play croquet through 4 periods. In about half an hour I'll be back to giving tests to my last couple of classes... 6th graders.

Good times. Kids are very well behaved though. Not one single problem.

Well, how do you like it? I've been subbing since January, and I must admit that I wanted to quit after spending the first day with a group of 5th graders straight from Hades. But it gets better, don't worry! :p You've got middle school, so that's not bad at all. My advice is to stay away from elementary--not only is it about as mentally stimulating as watching grass grow (in my opinion), those kids will chew you up and spit you out. You wouldn't think it, but they can and they will. Middle school and high school are GREAT, though--have fun! :)

It all depends on the person and their personality, although I personally happen to agree with you. I know that my skill in education rests with the older kids. In fact, I still run screaming from kids who haven't made it to middle school, yet.

Also, I just want to say that it's great that y'all are getting your feet wet in education by subbing. It's such an awesome opportunity and I hope it doesn't scare you off. Be fair and firm and you will have no problems :)

I was fine until 6th period. We had a couple of guys that went into the ladies locker room and proceeded to trash a few items that had been left out. There was also a spill of a cooler in the boy's locker room. Other than that, it wasn't that bad.

edmond school district

I subbed there while my husband ( now ex husband) taught at Santa Fe and i recall when i subbed there ....my first day was miserable... i literally took a kid to the principals office my the ear.... i hated it. No resepct and sad sad sad money.

Heh...Middle school....fun ;)

My major is Middle Childhood Social Studies/Language Arts, so I actually like these kids. They're not that bad once you chill out and remember how it feel to be that age. That's a very odd time in your life, that's for sure :)

My First Day of Subbing

Many years ago, I decided to sub while my kids were little. Yes, of course I expected it to be different from all my college teaching. So...I got a call to finish out the year for a former student of mine who had terminal cancer.:(

I explained why I was there to the class and asked if they had any questions. One kid raised his hand and said, "Dr._, this kid over here just called me an F-A-G-E-T." I panicked! Was I supposed to yell at him? Correct his spelling? Laugh?"

Just then, another student hollered, "No, stupid! It's F-A-G-U-T!" Aggghhh! I laughed until I literally cried at the stupidity of the whole thing and kicked the first one out in the hall.
