Sorority Help!!

I go to Aurora University in Illinois. I am really interested in joining a sorority, but there's only one problem. I'm Caucasian, and all the sororities here are for African Americans. At my school, we have the option to start a new organization, and I really want to bring another sorority to my school. I don't want to make my own though. I want to open like a chapter of a sorority here. We used to have a chapter of Delta Nu here, but they had to close it. I really would like to be able to chapter off of Delta Nu, but I would be happy to learn about others I could do this from. If anyone knows how i can reach the "head quarters" of a main sorority to open a chapter, please let me know. Thank you!!

I don't know how intake works, but it wouldn't hurt at all to try it. Coming from experience, you never know how things will work out.

Yay, a user from the Chicago 'burbs! As many GCers would agree, choosing to start a sorotity is an amazing, frustrating, rewarding process. There are a number of threads that talk about this, and I am sure that the women who have been through this will have lots to share. Look around at the variosu threads. There is a ton of information!!
Here are some questions whose answers would help GCers to help you:
1. Are there other women interested?
2. Have you spoken with student affairs/student activites
learn more about the process to become a new student
organization?
3. What is that process?
4. Have you asked student affairs/student activities about the
history (or lack thereof) on your campus?
I am sure other GCers will have other questions, but maybe this is a start. Think about specific traits or values that you would hope to find in a sorority. Look at as many inter/national organizations websites. REad them all, and read as much as possible just for information. And, keep asking questions on GC. This is a great resource!! Good luck!!

Oh, in addition to NPC organization, there are other national sororities as well. I am drawing blank on a lot of names, but I am sure the fabulous GCers can help me with this. I know that some are multi-cultural (Theta Nu Xi, for example) and other are not (Kappa Beta Gamma.) Just for more options and education.

Thanks for all the helpful hints, I've already begun to look up different organizations on the web. When I go back to school on Monday I will find out more info on what we have to do here on campus to get a new organization. I'll get back to you then on how it went and what my next steps should be.

One thing to remember with National sororities is that they have to be invited to join the campus (at least that is how I think it works with ADPi). Someone can't just say I want to open this chapter and do it. The school has to petition to colonize a national sorority, it then usually petitions a few chapters who present proposals and then the school usually chooses one. Now all of this is what I've heard from previous colonizations.

I'm sure it is much more detailed and stressful but check with your schools greek life office and find out the specifics. You then need to find other girls who are interested in joining greek life to help you petition a sorority. Check out the national websites too for information. Most websites allow you to send a message to someone in the executive office and they will respond to your inquirey.

Legally Blonde & Delta Nu
 

Yep, I just popped in my DVD to double check, Delta Nu was Elle's sorority in Legally Blonde. I'm actually quite surprised that there was (is) a real sorority by the name. I say this because movies are pretty good about making something up because if they used a 'real one' they would have to go through all the legal hassles of getting permission from the EO of the chapter.
How ironic.

Yes, it was Delta Nu in the movie...HOWEVER, in the book it was Delta Gamma! :D

yeah, but with Delta Nu OMEGA on campus, "Delta Nu" would still be OK for the movie. Sounds like "Delta Nu" is the real sorority's nickname and the movie sorority's full name.

AChiO and Chi O come to mind as two completely different orgs. that only have the addition/subtraction of a letter to seperate their names.

Well if you're looking to start a national organization your options are basically wide open. Since there are no other nationals on your campus you don't have to worry about Panhel approval - just recognition from your school. To learn about nationl sororities a whole definitely browse the National Panhellenic Conference homepage. The site should have some info about starting a chapter. You should also consider writing to several sororities explaining your situation and expressing your interest in forming a chapter. Part of the reason we affiliated with AEPhi was because of how helpful they were when we were forming. Its a long and hard process (though totally worth it!!!) so you want to make sure you find a national that's going to work with you!
