Un-verified: George Bush once supported hazing

Counter Punch
from a long and negative article about George Bush titled “Stage Zero”

We saw George's (Bush) egocentric judgment during his college years as he publicly argued for the right of his fraternity, DKE, to use cruel hazing rituals, such as branding, on its pledges. After all, George said, "the resulting wound is 'only a cigarette burn.'" (New York Times, November 8, 1967).

The NYTimes online only goes back to 1996, so there is no easy way to verify this information or source.

I wouldn't be suprized he admitted to doing coke and being a drunk, so would hazing be in there too? lol

As you all know, I'm not a big Bush fan, however, it should be pointed out (by a guy who is the same age), that hazing was much more rampant then -- and not illegal as I recall.

From me, he gets a pass on this one -- it's just the way it was back then.

Today, I would feel differently.

And like Brother Lott of Sigma Nu who opposed integrating the Fraternity back in the 60's, I think he had lots of growing up to do at the time. It's really not fair to use someone's opinion 30 years ago against them.

It's like saying that Bill Clinton couldn't effectively be the commander-in-chief because he didn't support the war in Vietnam.

So what if GWB thought hazing was good in the 60's? What does that really have to do with anything in 2003?

Thank you sir, may I have another

As much as I love to rag on my friend W, I'm going to have to let this slide. Like DA said, this was acceptable back then...and before any sorority women start jumping in, I'd like to remind y'all that there were quite a few NPC groups who weren't allowing black women in at this time, so it's not like we were perfect either.

Now if he was still hazing Rummi, it'd be another story.

Jesus has anyone ever been burned by a cig.It hurts like hell. Even in the 60's I'd have have been angry about that.
My fraternity hazed,I graduated in 1988.
But we never made anyone drink or used physical torment.

yeah, only a cigarette burn. Like g41965 said, those things hurt like hell. My friend accidently burned me with hers. I can't even describe the pain. It's worse than when you burn your hand on a hot pot or pan.

I'll let him slide on that considering he made the comment 30+ years ago. I hope he feels differently now.

I'm with DeltAlum. Different times, different ideas.

It would be like saying that mothers who put their kids in cribs with lead-based paint in the 1950's were child abusers.
