Gwendolyn Brooks

This morning, as I was, going about my daily tasks, not thinking about how blessed I was to even be looking at the news, shoving one foot into a shoe and chewing on a bagle at the same time, when the news of the death of Gwendolyn Brooks came up on the screen. My heart sank. I had to remind myself to chew and swallow; I was so taken by the news. I had the opportunity to hear her speak about a month ago, and I passed it up thinking that I would catch her next semester because she comes to my school every year. That's when it hit me that tomorrow is never promised. We take for granted that we'll wake up every morning go through our routine, come home, go to bed, and start it all over again the next day. It was a truly sobering realization.

Just thought I'd share that with you.

I was very hurt by the news. She was an incredible poet. I wish that more people could have experienced the beauty of her words.

Oooh, she was an incredible talent, an unlike with Toni Morrison, you could understand what she wrote.

It is a great loss to the city of Chicago, my hometown, and a great loss to our nation.

I am praying for her family, friends, and fans.

My cousin was telling me that she went to a Black women's caucus meeting in her area and she brought a couple of Gwendolyn Brooks' poems to read, sort of as a tribute. Can you believe that out of the 20 or so women there, only 2 of them had even heard of Gwendolyn Brooks? I think that's disgraceful. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif
