Student dies after fraternity party
By Leah Hope October 6, 2003 — A freshman college student died after a fraternity party on the Illinois Institute of Technology's Chicago campus. ABC7 Video Clip Friends and family are mourning the loss of Amy Wiese. The 18-year-old chemical engineering student was a member of the women's soccer team. No matches will be played this week. "I think as word spread around the campus a lot of people are really in mourning," said John Baworowsky, ITT. On Saturday, Wiese and some friends-including fellow teammates-went to the Pi Kappa Phi house on campus. According to police, some of Wiese's friends told them she was drinking. However, other friends say she was not. At some point, she reportedly said she was not feeling well and went upstairs to lie down. Her boyfriend called 911 when he noticed she was having a hard time breathing. She later died. "It' just kind of scary because you think that could have been you at any party. You never know when stuff like this is going to happen," said Crystal Richards-Jimenez, IIT student. An autopsy was conducted on Wiese. Officials say those results will not be released until their investigation is complete. "So we don't know if it was some weird problem with some other medical condition. We're just not really sure yet at this point. We're trying to find out answers, too," said Baworowsky. Wiese was from west Bloomfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. "She was always really nice and always wanted to do everything that she could for everyone else and was thinking about everyone before she would think about herself. She was just very nice, a very nice girl and it's a shame," said Sarah Parker, high school teammate. A fraternity spokesman told ABC7 News that they have not had any disciplinary problems and they are cooperating with police. A memorial for Wiese has been planned at the school and soccer is set to resume over the weekend. You can see the ABC7 report by clicking on the video icon at the upper right. One as a Greek can only hope that it was of something not done at a party having to do with alcohol.
My heart is saddened by the lose of a young Greek who died to young!:( |
Not to be nit-picky, but I don't think this young woman was a part of the greek system...it just so happened that her unfortunate death occured at the Pi Kappa Phi house. But I don't see why the headline has to include the fact that she died at a "fraternity party" , it makes it seem like the fraternity killed her.

There are other stories out there on this. Apperantly she is a student at the Illinois Institue of Tech, but is originally form Detroit. She was visiting boyfriend, who is presumedly in Pi Kappa Phi, and had at the most 8 drinks.
The main part of the problem is that she got alcohal at a fraternity house, when she is a minor. There is where Pi Kappa Phi is open to liability. |
Update
The autopsy came back inconclusive. Apparently the medical examiner did not find enough alcohol in her system to label it an alcohol related death. Toxicology tests are being conducted, but results take 6-8 weeks.

Update:
http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/2754366/detail.html This article says that she had a previously undiagnosed heart disease and drinking had nothing to do with her death. Dee |
How horrible to die at such a your age of heart problems. But my question is why was she one the soccer team if had a heart problem. My doctor would not sign the physical becuase of my knee how could one do it if she had an heart issue.
Christia eta: i misread it, I did not see the word undiagnosed |
The article said that it was myocarditis.. a virus that affects the heart.

I bet the only thing alcohol had to do with it is that it's a depressant, so it may have slowed down her breathing/circulitory system enough so whatever the problem with her heart was actually became a huge problem.
I feel horrible for the brothers. It DOES sound like this was just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and now not only do THEY look like the bad guys, but they're also probably miserable that a girl they liked died at their house. |
