Fur Coats
Ok, so the thread about Siegfried and Roy got me thinking about this...
I'm all for animal rights in a pretty limited sense---I'm not psycho about it at all. I'm not going to put animal health above human health or anything, but I don't want anyone going around smothering bunnies for the hell of it. I'm not gonna be a vegetarian, but if we can I think we should find more humane ways of raising and slaughtering animals. But, is anyone else TOTALLY creeped out by animal furs/skins being a part of clothing/accessories? I find it just wierd, gross, and disturbing. Forget animal rights. I don't want that shit touching me! |
How about Leather?
But no, the idea of fur doesn't bother me lol. Great Line in a movie: Animal Activist: Do you know how many poor animals had to die to make that coat? Woman: Do you know how many rich animals I had to fuck to get this coat? |
I can deal with leather purses and shoes but nothing else. Even leather jackets get me grossed out.

I don't want any type of fur, but to each their own.

I hate fur coats with a passion! My mom has a mink that has been insured and stored! No matter how much I protest that minks are animals, she gives me a lecture. She tells me that she would never wear furs made from endangered species and the mink is a glamorized (or upper class) rat! I think fur coats are disgusting!

I myself do not wear fur, but to each her own.
When I was little, my parents and I went into NYC one day, and my mother was wearing her mink. We ran smack into an anti-fur protest. Naturally, my mom got all sorts of insults hurled at her - in front of her 12-year-old daughter. So, my dad went up to one of the protestors and complimented her on her leather boots. That was the end of that. :p |
For me, it's a mixed bag. I don't want to see animals suffer. The idea that the animals are raised solely for their fur seems cruel. And there are animals raised solely for their meat. But I did not have any problem having that steak for lunch.
And yes, usually if you have a leather coat, purse, etc. the animal was probably was used for food and not just its coat, while minks, etc. are used only for the coat. While it sounds all nice to say I don't want the cute little animals hurt--well I don't--- but there are some sweet fur coats that I would love to call my own. -wendi |
To be honest I've never really given a rat's butt about animal rights. Don't flame me, but I've never really felt passionate about things for or against animal rights.
As far as fur coats go, I think they're ugly and tacky. Kinda reminds me of the Alexis Carrington days on Dynasty. But then again it doesn't get cold enough here in Hawai`i to wear one anyway. |
I never understood throwing red paint on fur coats. The owner will probably go out and buy another fur coat. *shrug*

I like fur! :) I figure if I will wear leather or alligator accessories, why not?
I like animal and everything, but I don't value them as much as a human life. |
Furs feel extremely nice and are very warm. That's why we want them, of course. But once you have a fur-bearing animal as a pet - in my case, a rabbit - you just can't fathom making a coat or earmuffs out of anything you love so much, or any of its cousins.
There is really no need for a fur coat these days. It can be simulated with artificial materials - unlike meat - and the animals are only used for the fur and then discarded - unlike leather coats/shoes etc where the whole animal can be used. |
I love animals, and I love fur coats. Might be a dichotomy, but that's how it is

Some PETA morons were protesting meat at some random McDonalds here, yelling "Meat is Murder" Some guy was walking in front of their picket line eating a plain burger patty saying "So Is Coleslaw" |
