How Important is History?

I was at Stepshow most recently and me and another Bro started talking to some sorors about history of other organizations. I was impressed by how much the sorors knew not only about Alpha Kappa Alpha but Alpha Phi Alpha and the other BGLO's. When I was coming through into Alpha my Dean made sure all of us had a good knowledge of the other BGLO's (Even though the only greeks we saw outside of Alphas were AKA's) including the names of thier founders. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I also noticed that Sorors and Bros that have a better understanding of all the other organizations could appreciate theirs more. The question is do you think it is important for people to be educated in other organizations while they pledge or go through intake and why is it important?

If you were at the function I am thinking about why didn't you let a sister know you was a New Yaka (yes, I said Yaka) ... I think I hung with you in the beginning half of the night, Skee Phi my brother!!!
Anyway, to briefly answer your question ... I think History makes a person it would behoove all of us to know about each other, even though I know my APHIA founders I would not go so in depth as to learn all BGLO founders, but dates and why others were created is very important. And that does not necessarily have to come by reading books, communication and interaction with others can prove to be a good teacher in this area.

Education is Key, one can ever know enough!! I am gonna hit you up on e-mail in minute ;-0)

Sure I think it is important. The problem is, would the real facts be handed down; or would they become twisted in the process to accomodate the special interests of the individual. There are some people that create facts to make their organization look better. I apologize if I'm coming across negatively, but all of us know someone in one of the GLO's that does this. As leaders, we should emphasize the importance of AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY, and then OUR ROLE in it.
