Pass The Mic Tour
Pass The Mic Tour !!!
Tavis Smiley, Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West will sweep across the country from December 10-19 for an historic, six-city speaking tour called Pass The Mic! The energetic power trio of outspoken Black thought leaders will bring a special, two-hour program of information and inspiration to thousands in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore*, Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit. In the dynamic, "come-on-down" spirit of both old time church gatherings and contemporary poetry slams, Pass The Mic! will bring Smiley, Dyson and West together live onstage for an evening of thought provoking, interactive talks and discussions. There will be a different theme or "flava" for each tour stop, from leadership and politics to religion and love. Smiley, Dyson and West will take turns at the microphone before passing it around and giving people in the audience a chance to speak up and shout out! Smiley, Dyson and West, academic and media personalities, appear regularly on Smiley's daily radio program, The Tavis Smiley Show from NPR. Taking place just in time to usher in the December holidays and the New Year, Pass The Mic! kicks off Smiley's third season on NPR and inaugurates the premiere season of his new PBS program, Tavis Smiley, which debuts on January 5, 2004 Venue Dates, Time and Addresses December 10, 2003 7:00 p.m. Liacouras Center 1776 N. Not to be contrarian, but I'm not feeling this Pass the Mic Tour. I have great respect for all three brothers, especially Michael Eric Dyson and Cornell West who are both Alpha brothers, but we as black people talk things to D-E-A-T-H.
Do we really, at this point, need another round of talks and discussions about anything? The issues that plague our communities (drugs, police brutality, teen pregnancy, etc..) are well-known and documented. We have "symposia" out da ying-yang as it is. My hope for Pass-the-Mic is that at the end of yet another discussion, there are some action steps proposed and taken. Doesn't matter whether the steps succeed or not, but let's do something. If this is what they do with PTM, then I apologize in advance for my rant. |

Drop it like its hot
I just found out Juvenile will be playing the next town over tomorrow. He must be broke the hell down to be playing all the way up here. It is aobut two hours to the nearest Target and our WalMart closes at 10! We have cows on my campus and if I walk a couple of blocks there are wheat fields.
However if we can find out how much tickets are, we are going. If for nothing else I am sure there will be some "fashions" there and more posts to the "Aw Hell to Da Naw" thread. I know some specials folks are going to roll up in their huge pickups with their cowboy hats, wranglers, and cowboy boots. |
Studdard Tour Begins To Take Shape
As expected, second season "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard is planning a spring U.S. tour. A short list of confirmed theater dates is coming together, beginning with a March 4 show at Los Angeles' Pantages Theatre. Also on the books are shows in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Miami Beach and Clearwater, Fla., and Atlanta. No opening acts have yet been announced for the tour, which is expected to run at least into mid-April. The artist, famously described by "Idol" guest judge Gladys Knight as a "velvet teddy bear," performed this morning (Feb. 13) on ABC's "Good Morning America." He is also headlining a special "Ladies Night" concert tonight in Norfolk, Va., sponsored by WWHV-FM Virginia Beach, Va./WWBR-FM West Point, Va. (Hot 102.1/107.9). Studdard is out in support of his debut album, "Soulful." Released in December, the J Records set, which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and reached the pinnacle of the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally a month later. It has sold 1.3 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Album track "Sorry 2004" has become Studdard's second top 10 single on Billboard's Hot 100, with a 13-10 move on this week's chart. His debut solo single, "Flying Without Wings," peaked at No. 2 last June. As previously reported, Studdard's not the only "Idol" alum hitting the road. His fellow second season competitor, Clay Aiken, will co-headline a U.S. tour with first season winner Kelly Clarkson. That trek kicks off Feb. 24 in Charlotte, N.C.
