PIKE fraternity included in Autry civil suit
I don't know how many of you all know this but last semester here on Western Kentucky University's campus a girl was raped, and set on fire in her dorm room. She later died from her injuries. Her family has filed a civil suit against WKU, the RA's on duty that night and several other staff members, and the Pike fraternity. She had just left a party there, and the two men how are being a accused of killing her were also there and they were all driven to her dorm by a sober driver for the fraternity. The men were not members of the fraternity though. Her family and their lawyer say that the fraternity failed to properly supervise the event at which alcohol was provided. The fraternity is reviewing the lawsuit with attorneys and is expected to make a statement in response to the suit next week.

First of all let me say how incredibly sad that is. What a horrible way to die! But suing PIKE because of it is crap. I'm sorry, but that girl made a choice when she went to that party (and I suspect she knew that alcohol would be served) and if she chose to drink it, that was her again. Those guys weren't even PIKEs...They are the ones who allegedly committed the crime and they should be the only ones punished. Now I don't know the details of the case but I'm going to guess that she chose to get a ride from those men and even allowed them up to her room. And while what happened was so completely horrible I don't see how like the RA is at fault. Unless she was screaming help me they're going to kill me, how was the RA to anything was amiss. TO ALL PARENTS: When you send your children to college they are making their own decisions for the most part, stop blaming other people. She clearly made some bad decisions that night and though she doesn't deserve what happened to her those decisions were her own and her parents need to live with that.

Ok I don't know anything about this at all. But just reading that makes me sick to my stomach. Who rapes someone and then sets them on fire?!?!?!?!?! I've never even heard of such a horrible thing. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!?!

No one really knows all the details to what happened. The reason that the RA's are being sued is that our campus makes any vistors to a dorm sign in. That night the RA's hadn't made anyone sign in so they don't know if the guys were taken to her room or just followed her there. I do know that they've also been charged with robbery. So I'm guessing that they don't think she let them in willingly which wouldn't surprize me since we've had serveral armed robberies in our dorms. I know that the girl obviously had made some bad choices that night but to be sprayed with hairspray and then set on fire after being raped. I can't even imagine what twisted mind could do that to someone.

I read about this earlier in a chit chat thread. The link is here http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...threadid=39700

Thanks Aurora,
Strongly suggest everyone read that other thread. The story starts at sick and then gets much worse -- in every way. |
You know this story just made me want to cry! Pity her soul! Every living being on this planet deserves some decency while on earth and in death. Her method of death is sick beyond anything I can even imagine. The monsters and any other name you'd like to call them deserve nothing else but to have the same thing done to them. It says an eye for an eye in the Christian/Protestant Bible.
I pray for her foster family and friends now. We should all have a moment of silence in memorium for her death. She deserved so much more than this. It was obvious she was trying to make a better life for herself. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to realize her dream. :( |
That is possibly the most disturbing story that I have ever read. Those guys should be forced to bite the curb and get kicked in the back of the head, ala American History X. I was in a fraternity at the University of Texas, and believe me, those guys would not live to tell that story. I have a sister, and any of you guys that do, will affirm that if that happened to your sibling, there would be absolute hell to pay at any cost. Of course, we probably handle things differently down here in Texas.

Her parents are probably suing them b/c if they don't sue Pike, the RAs, etc. now, they can't re-file the claim later. It doesn't mean that Pike, or anyone for that matter, will be held responsible. As for whether or not they should be liable, I don't think anyone should make judgments on the situation if they don't know all the facts. All we know is a girl is dead and that it is so sad for her parents and the rest of her family and friends. Let's try not to judge the actions or character of the deceased if you weren't there to see it.

I'd suggest again that, if you haven't, you should read the other thread.
The "family members" who are filing the suit apparantely didn't have custody of the young woman. She had been placed with a foster family. What does that make the mother and aunt look like? I will refrain from comment on that. As for the fraternity chapter, there's every chance they could be held accountable since the party was a fraternity function and held at their house -- even though they provided a sober driver, etc. Chapters have been found liable for less. |
