Pledges Steal Socks From Wal-mart

SIU probing thefts, sorority

Southern Illinois University Carbondale officials have launched an investigation into two students' claims they stole merchandise from a local store as part of their initiation into a sorority.

Two pledges — Jamila Coachman, 23, of Carbondale, and Renita Davis, 19, of Riverdale — were arrested in June after stealing nearly $200 worth of items, primarily socks, from a Wal-Mart in Carbondale. They pleaded guilty earlier this month to misdemeanor theft and each was sentenced to 18 months court supervision.

Austin said during that hearing the women's attorneys told the judge that the two knew what they did was wrong but that they wanted to join the sorority.

Girl...you're too much.

These girls are fine examples of stupidity at its best.

Oy. That's a lotta socks. Stupidity at its best, indeed.

Keep in mind, of course, that they must be pure white socks - no off-white, no colored piping, etc...

"And the sock is our sacred symbol, because our feet are always cold. Now we will demonstrate our secret handshake: each of you puts a sock over your right hand, then you shake..."

:p

Well, excuuuuuuuuse me, but not every college town has a selection of high-end stores to choose from. Carbondale has Famous-Barr, JCPenney and then it's pretty much discounters. You gotta work with what's available. It's not as if they were at Northwestern, where they could tool over to an upscale mall or into Chicago and hit Saks, Bloomingdale's, or the boutiques off the north end of Michigan Boulevard.

You misunderstood what I meant (looking back over my post I can see how that would easily be possible!). All I meant is that, as socks at Wal-mart are cheap, 200 dollars in Wal-mart socks is going to come to a lot more socks than 200 dollars in, say, Nordstrom's socks.

If you're going to make your pledges steal something, why would it be millions of socks, of all things?

Haha like in Platteville - Wal-Mart and K-Mart. My chapter loves to come visit me in the "big" city now. ;)

Yall had a Walmart AND a K-Mart? Kath, you were living large. Whitewater had a Walmart.... and that was it. If you were really adventurous, there was a 'mall' in Janesville... if you can call it that :)

and I was thinking the same as Sugar&Spice...that is one hell of ALOT of socks. $6 for a bundle of 6 most likely as opposed to $10 for a pair at Nordstrom...kinda scary if you think about it...like what on earth would they DO with that many socks???

Way to represent your organization, new members! I wonder whose idea that was-- theirs or their local chapter's? This is a great lesson of why we think before we act 1) Am I going to look like an idiot when I am caught (because somewhere down the line, the truth will come out), 2) Will my organization become a laughingstock because of my poor decision making and representation of my GLO.

I agree-- not too smart.

D'oh! Yes, Designergal3, you're right. What can I say -- it's Friday, and most of the neurons had taken off early; the few that were left were hanging around complaining about either the new TV season or how much work they had to do, so of course they conflated "Michigan Avenue" and "Boul' Mich' " -- thus coming up with something to type that was neither the actual name nor a nickname. Bad neurons!

DeltAlum 09-19-2003 06:39 PM

I suppose the bottom line is that this sorority allegedly asked its' pledges to break the law. Whether at Walmart of Sax really makes no difference.

Insanity still reigns.
