Black Greek 101
I thought this book deserved a thread of its own, and I didn't already find one.
Black Greek 101 by Walter Kimbrough is a book about the traditions of BGLOs. What I like most about the book is that it is by no means limited to NPHC organizations. In fact, I think that's the book's most important feature. Too many NPHC members behave as though there are still only eight organizations, when in fact, there are closer to 80 BGLOs. I also think an important feature of the book was the discussions about hazing and membership intake. It was brutally honest on all sides. Reading about the many accounts of injuries that members inflict on "pledges" or even other members was pretty sickening. Kimbrough even takes the bold approach of addressing the fact that homosexuality in our orgs is an issue that our leadership refuses to address. It EVEN discusses the challenges of Latino Greeks. This book has everything but the kitchen sink, and I STRONGLY urge that all Greeks and aspirants purchase it. |
Is that 80 active black greek organization?
|
Of the 80, only SOME are no longer active.
The majority are very active local or regional organizations, many of which have national aspirations. |
This book sounds really interesting. I've always wanted to learn more about BGLOs but information that isn't extremely biased is hard to find.

I am currently reading the book and as a research junkie I am enjoying it alot!

Does anyone know if it's out in paperback anywhere yet? I checked Amazon, but they don't have the paperback in, and I'd much rather pay $23.00 than $40 something.

Kimbrough is one intelligent brother
And one of the most driven men I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I look forward to reading this book (someday - the exchange rate in Canada is MURDER). If it's anything like his lectures, it will be highly informative and lively reading.

I'm also going to budget and get this book soon. Sounds really interesting; I've seen excerpts and reviews on other Greek sites. |
ST, I'd still have to pay the exchange rate one way or the other. $50 US is like $75 Canadian, and I love Walter, but DANG. :D
I'm going to ask the public library to order it. There may not be that many black folks in my town, but they're really good about ordering "black interest" books. |
