grades for rush
Ok so I was wondering...Does someone have to have a certain GPA at the time of RUSH. For instance incoming freshmen, is thier high school GPA taken into consideration. And then there are the girls who dont rush until there 2nd semester or year and what not. Then what about the transfer students. Is it harder on them? the transfer students is what i'm really interested in.
Or does this vary from school to school. |
The short answer is yes, there is a min GPA for recruitment and at some places (at least for us) it is different (slightly) when you're talking a HS GPA (freshman rushing at the start of school) compared to a college GPA (women rushing second semester or later).
There are others on here more versed than me in the rules however who can give more details......... |
To expand upon what SmartBlondeGhB said, yes, most campuses have a minimum GPA to participate in recruitment and they will pass the information on to chapters who all have their minimum requirements of new members.
Your campus panhellenic should be able to tell you the range for chapters on your campus. As a transfer student, both your high school and collegiate grades will be looked at, but collegiate grades, even at a different school will be more heavily weighted. If you had good grades at the school that you are transferring from, it should be just as easy for you as an incoming freshmen. In some ways, it might even be easier because you've proven that you can handle the academic workload at the college level. |
At our school incoming freshmen are not allowed to rush in the Fall because they don't have a college GPA, in which case, their highschool GPA does not come into consideration.

It often depends on the rules set up by your campus panhellenic. They will normally define a minimum GPA standard to participate in recruitment. There will be a minimum for current students, one for new freshmen, and one for transfers. For instance, at my university, you must have a 2.25 to participate in recruitment. If you're an incoming freshmen or transfer, you must have a 2.5.
Also, chapters have a GPA requirement as well, that may very well be higher than what campus sets. If you're interested in a particular sorority, you may inquire with them at rush about what their minimum GPA to join is. Hope this helps. |
Good question though!
My campus is the same, minimum for recruitment, different at each house varying from 2.5 up to a 3.0. It is also different for college GPA and HS GPA. Some chapters are allowed to take "grade exceptions" where they can pledge someone under that chapters minimum GPA but there are not many cases for this, and I don't hear of it happening much unless a chapter just falls in love with a girl and they can't bear to have bid day without her! That, btw is a great feeling for that girl! |
Thanks for all the answers...Heres my situation, I just recently moved back home from being away for 2 years. For several reasons one being academically. I'm not a school person so moving back home was good for me to get focused again however my grades arent the best form my previous school. Thats my concern. I have a 2.0 but I dont want the fact that i'm a transfer student to effect that. My fear is that being a transfer people will have high expectations of me when my whole deal is that I'm working on raising my GPA and focusing more now. So as of right now i'm finishing some GEs at a JC hoping it will raise my GPA a little so that way i'm not looked down upon when i do transfer.
Thanks Again |
