how exactly does this work? how do they get picked, when do they get picked, and how often do you get gifts for each other?

It's usually different for every chapter, so the way we do it here may be different from a school in California. For us, after getting to know all the new members, the sisters make a list of their top three choices for little sisters and the new members makes a list of their top three choices for little sisters. Then there's some way that they match the names (I don't know because I'm not New Member Ed) and the big sis finds out. Then during the next week (Revealing Week), the big sis gives the little sis clues as to who she is and at the end of the week finds out. I heart this week so much. One of my favorite memories of joining. :-)
