Rush at Western Illinois University

How did the chapters at Western Illinois do during fall 03 recruitment??

AlphaFrog 09-09-2003 12:18 AM

I heard from a Chi-O that we only had 77 make it through to Pref Night... how sad:( I'm very upset for the wonderful ladies of our Greek system.

33girl 09-09-2003 11:28 AM

What are the numbers usually like there? I think we would be dancing in the streets over 77 LOL.

xo_kathy 09-09-2003 12:19 PM

33 - she means 77 total PNMs at ALL pref parties combined! They started the week with about 180 PNMs but a bunch dropped right before pref.

Quota was set for 18 with 6 chapters. 77 girls attended prefs. You do the math!

33girl 09-09-2003 12:27 PM

180 to 77 does suck, but considering we've had years where we had to cancel rush cause no one showed up (!) if we get double digit pledge classes, it's miraculous! :)

xo_kathy 09-09-2003 12:29 PM

Ah ha! I see...

owlie33 09-09-2003 12:31 PM

I heard the same thing. From what I understand, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Zeta, and Phi Sigma Sigma all made quota of 18, while Alpha Sigma Tau, Chi Omega and Sigma Kappa did not.

What is going on at WIU? Something needs to change with whomever is administating Greek Life...

Megerts 09-21-2003 08:21 PM

What's up with Greek life there?? I'm thinking of transfering and just wondered if upperclassmen were welcomed, because that is certainly not the case here...

As a member of a sorority at WIU, I feel like the general sentiment towards upperclassmen as PNMs is relatively unwelcoming. We don't like to accept upperclassmen as new members in our house unless it is an extraordinary circumstance. Most of the time we only accept freshmen. The greek system at WIU is pretty pathetic right now. I feel like we are wasting our money on a system that is quickly going down the tubes. Having quota set at 18 new girls is not very encouraging. I think PNMs drop so frequently because the see how weak the system is, and they don't want anything to do with it. It's hard to talk girls into something that isn't as great as it once was or is at other schools. There is a definite problem at Western regarding the greek community, and it needs to be fixed!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the Greek system is in as dire of straits as it sounds here, groups are usually ecstatic for any quality members they can get, and that includes juniors or even seniors. Why would sororities turn upperclassmen away when they could possibly help the chapter?? Maybe part of the problem is too much youth and not enough experience.

I'm sure your PNM's and New Members would feel really welcome after they read this.

I rushed at WIU as a soph. and I never felt unwelcome....in fact in my pledge class there was only 1 freshman. Alot of women at WIU rush as Soph/Jrs.

Yes, the Greek system at WIU could use some help, but it's not totally pathtic. For the size and location of WIU, I think it's fine.

And thanks DZHBrown for reading my mind. Hopefully it won't discourage women from finding their home here at WIU.

SunnyGirl483 09-22-2003 06:18 PM

I am also a student at WIU and I believe the reasons for such a low recruitment turnout is because the girls are worried about the financial obligations, or because they believe they will be hazed.
I do agree that the greek system at WIU is not as strong as it was before and an improvement needs to be made

DeltaBetaBaby 09-22-2003 08:01 PM

Every chapter at WIU is represented somewhere else in the state. Is there a way the chapters at EIU and ISU and U of I could help out?

Oh, that's kind of sad... but like they said before it doesn't make a whole lot of sense... do you know the reasoning behind this??
