Fall Rush

How many girls did your chapter pick up this fall? Theta Beta at Roanoke College has eight lovely new ladybugs this fall! :D All of the sororities at Roanoke got about the same number of new members: DG=6, PhiMu=7, and ChiO=7.

How exciting..you'll have to sign them all up for GC;) This board could use some more activity!

Nice to hear ASA at Roanoke is going strong; when I was in school (many years ago), a lot of chapters were struggling.

I've been PMing with a girl going through Penn State rush, and I'll be sure to have her find out how the ASAs do They're not finished until towards the end of the month - with 20 sororities, its' a LONG rush period.

Although our chapter normally made quota (or close to it), I know we lost some girls (not usually the ones we wanted all that bad) whose family or friends from other schools would say things like "I've never heard of ASA - it must be local. You should go with Chi O or Theta, they have really strong nationals."

Is this something anyone else out there has had to deal with?

The first time I went to an alum panhel meeting here, I wrote my affiliation in Greek letters and the lady calling the roll said Alpha Epsilon Alpha. I wanted to fall through the floor.

ASA is REALLY strong in Missouri and Kansas - that's where (for the most part) all our oldest chapters are. Alpha Sigma Tau is kind of like that in PA - they were huge at my school, but a lot of people haven't heard of them either.

I know that in PA, it's like the state schools have one bunch of chapters, the private schools (like Lehigh, Bucknell etc) have another bunch, and Penn State and Pitt are mixed since they are the biggest.

At Roanoke, I don't think we've had much of a problem with girls not rushing us because we're not as well-known nationally as the other sororities on campus. It probably helps that there are seven chapters and one colony of ASA in Virginia. Because Roanoke College attracts a lot of Virginians, ASA is no more familiar or unfamiliar to them then any other NPC sorority. Also, Roanoke College is so small (about 1250 students), girls usually have a chance to get to know the personalities of all the sororities before formal rush and don't have to choose based on national reputation. We only recieved our charter 2.5 years ago, but I already see us making great strides in the Greek and other campus communities. I look forward to Theta Beta becoming an even greater force at Roanoke College and an example of what it means to be an Alpha Sigma Alpha! :)

Right - you guys have Longwood down there, and a few other stronger ASA chapters.

Congrats, and keep us posted with how things are going!

Oh, and a happy ASA rush story:
After I graduated, I was at a picnic in my parent's neighborhood, and there was a girl who was heading out to Penn State and knew nothing about sororites. So I told her what fun they were and how nice it is to be involved in the Greek system at a school that, with 40,000 students, can be so overwhelming.

I forgot all about it until I got a note a few months later - not only had she taken my recommendation and rushed, but she had gone ASA (a one-in-18 chance, back then)! Of course she then extorted Dance Marathon money from me for 4 years, so I paid for it, but it was still nice.

Psi Psi picked up 3 from formal recruitment but we have already had a Continous Open Recruitment where we picked up 5 or 6 more so we have a like 8 or 9 new members right now Phi Mu and Tri Sigma made quota which was like 22 I believe and AOPi i'm not sure how many they got.

On a side note, Kat Burns from Theta Beta is our LC at the moment she's awesome! :)

Congrats on the new members! Awwwe! I LOVE Kat Burns! We miss her SOOOO MUCH this year!

Awwwe! Tell her JoAnn said "hi!"

HeavenslilAngel 09-14-2003 06:46 PM

Okay. She'll be here in like 3 or 4 weeks.
