SC Lottery
To all greekchat.com members in SC:
How are you going to vote? I am for the lottery, but I feel because I am a christian I should be against the lottery because it is gambling. So that is how I will vote but I do like Gov. Hodges' plan for education? Tiff |
I live in South Carolina also. I am for the lottery for one reason. If people are willing to spend their money on lottery tickets, then the state needs to capitalize off of the funds for education. I was in a way for video poker as well for the same reason. If people were willing to throw away their hard earned money on "foolishness" the state needs to take advantage of this. I can't see taxing the people each and every time you need money. Just the other day my mother received her property tax bill, and just the county tax alone was $900 plus dollars!! This is for a small county with 30,000 people.
Again if it is for the purpose of education or lowering taxes then I am for it. Some other states have lotteries for the same reason and their school systems are achieving. South Carolina has some of the worst school ratings and we need to bring the schools up to par with the rest of the nation. Sorry for the long post. |
I'm still undecided. I feel you on the gambling issue, but must admit I've bought some Georgia Lotto tickets a few times in the past. Gov. Hodges wants to model our lottery after the one in Georgia, but there are a couple of problems that may influence whether or not it is successful if approved: 1. South Carolina does not have the population base that Georgia has, and 2. South Carolina does not have the border states that Georgia has to feed into its lottery system.
Georgia has Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina as border states. We only share borders with Georgia and North Carolina. |
I too live in SC and I am all for the lottery. In this area there are a lot politicians working hard and spending money on a campaign to prevent the lottery from becoming a reality here. I feel like the lottery in Georgia has done a lot for education there and (not to offend any teachers on the site, but)SC could use some of that funding. I keep hearing people moaning about how the lottery will target people who are least able to afford to play. What did video poker do? I personally know of people who were hurt by it. I can't see the lottery affecting people the same way. I never put one cent into a video poker machine, but I can see myself buying lottery tickets. I haven't had to meet the requirements of the "Back to School" list yet, but many of my co-workers have. Year after year the lists get longer and longer. When I was in elementary school I don't recall having to buy all of this stuff, it was provided by the school. My child is only 3 and I hope by the time she enters school that SC will have a lottery in place that will fund education on all levels and allow our children to compete on even ground with children from states where education is taken more seriously.

I am not from South Carolina, but I can give a little insight. Upon grduation from high school, I was the recipient of a scholarship that pays 75% of all of my tuition costs. I was able to use the scholarship at any institution in this state. This scholarship was funded by the state lottery. I can not imagine what I would have done without this scholarship. I know many people who benefited from the state lottery scholarship programs. Just know that when you make your decision, that the scholarship programs that are set up by means of the lottery, help a lot of students (who otherwise may not have been able to afford it) to further their education. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

To The Top!!!
Has anyone from SC that isn't eligible for federal financial aid actually received this scholarship? What do you have to do to sign up? I wanted to find out more about it being that I may not be eligible for aid next semester! |
