Greek Teachers?
 

Did any of y'all have teachers in grade- or high school who were Greek? Did they ever make mention of it?

Out of the blue last night, I started thinking about my sixth grade history teacher. As part of Ancient Cultures, we had to memorize the Greek Alphabet - forwards and backwards. At the time, she mentioned that she was in the oldest sorority. I can't help but wonder if she is an ADPi or the GLO who first used the word "sorority" (brain cramp here!).

So, Mrs. Bridges of Louisiana State University, I thank you for saving me from having to learn the Greek Alphabet during my pledge period!

I also ran into two different high school teachers while wearing my lavalier. One was a Chi Omega, the other was a Theta Phi Alpha. Mrs. Sauers, the ChiO, was my home room teacher, and sweetly said, "I see you're wearing a lavalier - are you my sister?" and then was disappointed that I wasn't.

Did anyone else have similar experiences?

My second grade teacher was Greek, but I don't recall her ever talking about it in school. I only know, because she is a friend of the family.

Honeychile, that would be the lovely Gamma Phi who first used sorority, but if she went to LSU she'd be an ADPi, we've never been at LSU.

My track coach senior year, who also taught special ed, was a Theta Chi. He didn't talk about it too often, but then again, he was coaching female shot putters. He did wear letters to practice/meets occasionally.

i don't know about any of my teachers, but my high school nurse is an ADPi. i was really close to her in high school (i was her aide for 3 years and a member of the club she advised) so she was excited that i went greek, although a little disappointed i went phi mu when there was an ADPi chapter at my school. She hasn't had any luck with her kids either yet. He oldest daughter joined Alpha Xi last year.

My first exposure to sororities was at the LSU lab preschool, when I was 4. Many of the student teachers had lavalieres, and I thought they were beautiful, even if the letters didn't look like the ones I was learning. I knew that they got the jewelry because they were in a special club, and I'd seen the sorority houses to know that the letters on the front matched those pretty necklaces. One of our student teachers took us to her house with the funny letters on the front, where there were lots of pretty girls who were nice to us. I decided then that I would be in one of those clubs when I was old enough.

My third and fifth grade teachers, whom I both adored, I learned were Kappas after I became one too.

My 9th grade English teacher is an AKA, I know as she had a license plate frame on her car.:) My cheer adviser is a DZ at the school where I went, but I didn't find that out until I came back for homecoming. I don't know if both are still active in their respective orgs, but I had always wondered after I figured out what the greek system was. I was pretty clueless going in to school as I am the first person in my family to be greek and go to college as well.

If I had any greek teachers when I was in school, none of them ever mentioned being greek or had any paraphanelia around their classrooms.

Now, I keep some things from AGD in my classroom. I have a glass from one of our formals next to my computer, holding all my sharpee markers. I also have red, yellow, and green stars on my desk and a squirrel poster near the door. Sometimes when I wear my lavalier, my students will ask me about college and Greek Life.

I don't recall having any Greek teachers. After I get my Master's and start teaching high school, I'll probably keep some DZ stuff in my room.

I *think* that my high school senior English teacher was in a NPHC org... Maybe Delta Sigma Theta?? Anyway, whichever it was, she kicked ass!! :) :) :)

I had a great number of teachers who are MY SORORS of DSQ. It is a hoot to run into them at conventions and step with them. :D

I also had teachers who were members of Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Alpha Kappa Alpha. I'm not sure of any other D9 orgs or NPC orgs.

My seventh grade geography teacher was a member of AKA. I saw it on the front of her car and I though she had a secret identity. (AKA, Also Known As...) I found out from her that it was a sorority that she belonged to and as far as I know that was the only teacher that I had that was open being a member of a GLO. Im sure others were! But she was a really awsome teacher :)

I have two ironies with the Greek teachers in my life. I know that a few of my teachers were in Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma. To my knowledge, none of my teachers were sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho, but I still found the right way to go. :D

I just found out that one of my favorite English teachers is a member of Zeta Phi Beta. When I was in 8th Grade blahblahblah years ago, she never mentioned it at all. I was shocked to learn it after all these years. The funny thing is that she has known that I'm also Greek for at least 1 year, but she's never alluded to Greekdom with me. :confused:

my middle school band teacher is an alpha xi delta, but i never found out until i ran into her one day and she saw me wearing my pledge pin. it was kinda cool cuz i was always close with her when i was in school, and even when i was in high school.

That would be so totally cool!! :)

I've never had any teachers who alluded to being Greek, but up here in Madison that's not exactly a surprise.

Since I'm planning on teaching high school, though, I'll definitely mention that I was in a sorority or have some letters around. Hopefully I can encourage some girls who otherwise wouldn't go Greek to join sororities, or write some recs for these girls . . . we'll see.
