NPC Women: has your sorority ever, in history, initiated a man?
Hi Ladies,
Now before you go, "Uh, CutiePie2000, are you crazy? Sororities are for WOMEN", please hear me out. I know that in some special circumstances, a man has been initiated into historically female GLOS. For example, as you know, I am a member of Delta Gamma, and Delta Gamma has had one male initiate, that being George Banta (who also was a Phi Delta Theta). Sidebar: I know that Dr. Charles Richardson (a Kappa Sigma), though he was a male, helped start the founding of Chi Omega, although I am not sure if he was an initiate of Chi Omega himself. Sidebar #2: What about that Professor Coddington? Since he had a hand in Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Gamma Delta, did any of these sororities initate him? I am thinking "no". So, I'm just wondering if the other NPC groups have similar stories to tell? Please chime in.... |
Interesting Topic!
As far as I know, Alpha Gamma Delta has not had a male initiate. However, Dr. Wellesley Coddington is affectionately called the "father" of Alpha Gamma Delta because he had the initial idea of creating a new sorority at Syracuse, and he presented the idea to Marguerite Shepard. He also provided us guidance with ritual, administration, extension, etc.
Dr. Coddy was a member of the Eklektos Society (also called Phi Nu Theta). |
I have never heard of this before.....interesting....

To the best of my knowledge, Gamma Phi Beta has never done this. I speculate that if we would have, it would have been Charles Cobb, Charles Moss, Dr. Smalley (who coined the word sorority), Dr. Coddington, or Dr. Haven (father of one of our founders who helped with founding).

J. Miller Leake was initated in Tri Sigma I believe. A member of Kappa Sigma at Randolph-Macon Men's College, he wrote the Sorority's initiation ritual, helped revise the Constitution and assisted in writing the lyrics to Stately and Royal.

Wasn't Dr. Potter Benton intiated into DZ? I know he was made grand patron.

To my knowledge, no man has ever been initiated into Alpha Omicron Pi.

Cant Remember where but I am with ZNTKE711 on this one!
I remembr reading that there were 3, maybe four different Soroitys who have males Initiated into their Orgs! Of course, this was very way back in the Soroitys History! It may have been very well, when My Chapter Helped a Local start a Soroity on campus who could have gone PM but shot themselves in the foot so to speak and said Hell no we are bigger!:( DAH, NO longer there! |
to the best of my knowledge Phi Mu has never initiated a man, although we have extended the invitation to men to become honorary members around the time we were founded (most notably Robert E. Lee, T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Dr. O.L. Smith)

As far as I can remember from reading AOII's Celebrate the Century book, no man has ever been intiated into AOII. However, many many years ago they use to have IIOA's, which were husbands and fathers of AOIIs who helped out and attended events such as alumni events and rush events.
