I just don't know what to think about it...

to be honest at first i thought that someone had got our information wrong. but then after looking back at your post i noticed that in the link it said alpha omega pi. i then figured out what you meant by being ticked off. i have heard of people getting us confused but i just thought that was because of the name and that movie pumkin where they are called the A O Pi's. but the nickname, colors, flower and symbol are just so close to ours.

What's the saying? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...or something like that...

Believe it or not, we used to have a chapter at Youngstown (Phi Lambda's charter has been held in trust since 1982, according to the history book.)

This one may have started as a local wanting to recolonize that chapter, and for whatever reason never has. Other than that, I couldn't tell you why they seem to have the same external symbols that we recognize as Alpha Omicron Pi. The combination of items makes me curious, though.

Yes, they are a group that is a local, and would love to re-develop AOII at Youngstown.

Unfortunately, we don't have trademark on the Omega part - but who knows - maybe down the road Youngstwon will open up for AOII again, and they are ready to go!

I am wondering why they are listed as an NPC sorority. That seems a little off.

I had that same thought. Not only that but, don't you have to be at least a National Organization to be apart of NPC? And since there was one at SUNY-G, and they don't seem related... I'm just soo confused...

I don’t see where they are referred to as being National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). I only saw Panhellenic Council, which is a big difference. A member group of the NPC does have to meet the minimum requirements for membership. One of the criteria is that it is national in scope; 13 chapters with the youngest chapter being established no less then two years. A Collegiate Panhellenic Council can have member groups of almost any type of sorority. They can be NPC, NPHC, MCGLO, professional, local, or regional. As long as they are following their CPH constitution and by-laws, regarding membership, then it isn’t a problem.

Regarding similar names, it is more common then you may think. There are, for example, three national organizations named Delta Phi Epsilon. One is an NPC member. The other two are a related professional Foreign Service fraternity and sorority. There are many interesting threads about this subject.

I told Leah, Catherine, and Amanda about that tonight, and the looks on their faces! That kind of ticks me off about their items being the same as ours, but, I agree with the comment about recolonizing. If they do, then those ladies are ready to go!

At first I thought, "oh well, we are Alpha Omicron and they are Omega" but when I saw their mascot and rose, I am a little bit ticked! If they ended up becoming another sorority when they did go national, would they keep those? NOOOO--because they are Alpha Omicron Pi's! Sorry, maybe that was mean but I like my panda's and roses!!!

Aren't there rules against this....?

Sounds a little too familiar to me.

I'm going to speculate that this is still the group hoping to recolonize Phi Lambda at some point in time. Anyone (aopirose? NeonPi?) know anything about them? Maybe Youngstown is possibly considering opening for expansion?

I guess I don't see this as flattery. At first I thought maybe it was started by holdovers from Phi Lambda, but that chapter closed in 1982 and this group didn't start until 1997. It seems like they just went to our website and copied everything making minimal changes. Stalkerish if you ask me.

From what I know, it is as NeonPi said. This group wanted to recolonize Phi Lambda. I don't think that we have had real contact with them or the PHC/university in years. If Youngstown opens, we will take a close look at the situation.

I know that some are upset about the duplication. However, I don't think that these women intended to be local for this long. They probably thought a semester at best and still clung to the hopes of becoming AOII. To be honest, this is not all that uncommon and it doesn't just happen to AOII.

I know one of the ladies that worked to either start this local or was a part of it - I'm not completely sure which is which. But I can tell you that they chose what the did with the purest of heart. It was not intended to mock AOII.
