Source Awards

Did you watch? If so, what did you think? Before I post my opinion, I just wanted to know what others thought.

I saw the Source Awards and for the most part it was aiiight. I loved Mo'nique!! She was holding it down http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. As much as I sometime hate admit it, I LOVE LIL KIM'S SONG!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. For me that was the highlight. Over all I should have watched a repeat of something else or nothing at all.

AKAtude 08-30-2000 10:43 AM

I watched the "pre-show" with Brandy and Ray J. After Eve won the award for best new artist, I grew tired of it. The morning radio personalities were giving props to Mos Def's opening commentary.

SkeeBunny 08-30-2000 10:54 AM

I wanted to get others opinions first to see if I was just getting old or if my issues were justifiable. Ok, here's my take on the whole show. I was kind of appalled by most of the program. I understand that this is a show "for us, by us" but damn, why do we always represent "us" in the way that we do. There were so many bleeps while people were talking that I had to truly figure out what was being said. The "n" word was used repeatedly and some people were acting like they just had no home training. I guess it's true ... money can't buy you class. Then, to top it off, a huge fight broke out in the audience and the rest of the show had to be cancelled. And we wonder why people (not just white folks) criticize the hip-hop culture and all that it entails. It was surreal that different celebrities had to come on to compensate for the rest of the time slot and give public service announcements against violence. While the camera scanned the audience, I saw several notables (i.e. Maxine Waters and hubby) and I just cringe to think that they were subjected to such animilistic behavior.

Am I off base here or is anyone else feeling me? If I'm missing something, please enlighten me.

SkeeBunny, I am most definitely feeling you. The Hip-Hop community (to me) acts as if they are from another world and it's uncool to show respect or even give other groups or rappers props.

I know that it's an image that they have to portray, but did we have to have all the cursing and the use of the "n" word for ALL of the world to see. Even cute little Bow-Wow was cursing. My goodness, at what point do we draw the line.

I would like to add that I am truly a fan of Hip-Hop; however, I think that they do not have to keep reinforcing the idea that they are stupid, ignorant and do not know how to conduct themselves in public!

No, you are not off base at all. I applaud you for saying what you did. That is, in part, one of the reasons why I could not continue watching it.

I'm sorry, but I usually like the Source awards show. However, after seeing last night's fiasco, I think that they should just have a 1 hour special next year. No audience, no stage... Have celebrity hosts tell us what the category is, show the video clips and only interview the winners(who know that they've won ahead of time). I should have made last night " A Blockbuster night." http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

Skeebunny, I definitely agree w/ you. I watched last night and was sitting there w/ my mouth wide open like "oh no they didn't go there". It was a trip! My friend who was watching it, called me and said "Wow, I'm proud to be black right now, aren't you?". I was truly embarrassed at the way people were behaving. And after Meth and Redman won, I was just thinking "dang, is everybody else gonna bring a whole mob up to the stage when they win too". I didn't watch the whole show all the way through cuz I just couldn't. I had to flip to other things. I did see Lil Kim and she was good....w/ the exception of the butt cleavage...but she performed well. And Lil Bow Wow swearing was not cute but he was pretty hype in the end. All in all, they should have not aired it. Then to make it worse, the local news did a segment on it! They showed the clips from the actual fight and when everyone was told to leave. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif I tell ya, we gotta get it together!

ps--did any of ya'll see the commercial about the beauty salon? It was for a salon that does braids and they stay open 24/7!

It is sad,but i must agree with all of you. to me the show was sick.i do listen to some hip-hop but i feel that some artist are badly representing our race. after watching the show i felt sad because i know if black children look up to hip hop stars than no wonder why our community has such a problem. The thing that hurt me most is lil bow wow,how could JD have some toddler cursing on national TV. Hip Hop or not i think it is time that people understand that public perception means a lot and i lost all respect for JD.

PinkCashmere 08-30-2000 01:59 PM

Wow, you guys make me glad that I didn't watch the show. I'm not a big hip hop fan anyway, but like to stay up on what's going on. From what you guys have said and from what I have heard on the radio and tv, I am embarrassed for everyone who attended the show and was a part of it.

We wonder why there are so many negative stereotypes and so much negative publicity about black folks. But then we contribute to it by the things we do, how we act, and what we say. How sad!

LadyAKA 08-30-2000 02:27 PM

I can't believe they aired the show, I grew tired of seeing the same clips, they showed numerous people over and over because once the show was actually stopped the producers still had to make up something for us to see and it was just HORRIBLE. What was weird was that I liked Lil Kim's on stage parts .... usually on any other awards I would not have watched her (ie I would be paying attention to those with real talent), but her bit was really the only entertaining piece of the awards.
Buster did his thang, he was just trying to keep the crowd smiling.
Oh well, what we gonna do now??

Hello sorors and sisterfriends! Did anyone else notice how they cut and paste parts of the show together? Why did Monique have on one outfit and then change and then came back with the same outfit? And, why did Buster do the same thing? And, why did Method Man give the media their a** to kiss? I tell you sometimes we just show our a**! I agree, Lil Kim was about the best act on the show, along with Bow Wow. He is too cute! She could have kept her behind covered, though! And what was the deal with all of the exspensive cars on stage? I tell you the truth! I did watch the entire thing, though!

Catwoman 08-30-2000 04:28 PM

SkeeBunny...you are not getting old...that program was just trifling...you might say straight ghetto! I watched some of it because my friend called and told me to turn it on...I watched a little but couldn't take it...so I changed channels. I listen to some of the hip hop artists and enjoy the music...but the nation could have done without that show!

ALthough my comment was lite hearted in comparison to the others here I wanted to say that I have grown tired of these award shows for a real long time. Everyone's comments here can start a myriad of discussion ie: us versus them, keeping it real, using the 'n' word, how this ultimately has an affect on our younger generation. I am curious to know from you guys, what can we do to help change the mind-set of the youth who are and will be inevitably fascinated by this type of lifestyle? I mean it was only 10 years ago where everyone was preaching 'consciousness'.

AKA2D '91 08-30-2000 06:54 PM

That show was just too "low budget" for me! Sorry, but it was just not for me! I LOVE hip-hop, but dang.... the videos they make were better than that fiasco!
