Sorry to crash but I have a question for you and I couldn't find anything definitive on apo.org.

I'm going to a community college this fall that used to have an APO chapter but no longer does. Michigan State University is *literally* right down the road. I know NPC sororities don't allow members from other schools but other GLO's do sometimes. What is APO's policy on that? LCC (the community college I'm at) doesn't have too much I'm interested in, and I was hopeing to try and join APO when I transferred to State anyway. Is there anyway I can start my membership before I attend MSU?

Hi Millie!

I am sure someone will come here and verify what I say (it never fails) but as far as I know, in order to pledge APO, you must be enrolled at the school where the chapter is located.

You have two options:

1. Wait until you transfer to pledge.

2. Investigate rechartering the inactive chapter at your school. The recharter effort that I was the sponsor for took approximately 13 months from information session to chartering.

If I were you....and depending on how much time you have left at your CC, I would go to an APO info session at MSU, and just see if you can attend some of their service projects throughout the year. You might decided that it's exactly what you want to do and you'll meet people...or you might not like it at all, and you'll be glad you didn't/couldn't pledge.

Don't feel sorry for crashing here, the board is about Alpha Phi Omega, not limited to only brothers of Alpha Phi Omega (there are a couple of Sisters of Gamma Sigma Sigma who post periodically). I more or less agree with what Senurset said, but let me give you some more info...

Lansing Community College's chapter (Tau Kappa) went inactive in 1971. It chartered, I think in '67 or '68.

Alpha Phi Omega used to (from about 10 years ago to about 4 years ago(?)) had the concept of extension membership which was designed to give an anchor to a group trying to start a chapter by allowing membership in another nearby chapter. It never really worked the way it was intended...

I would certainly send email describing your situation to the following people: Steve Merritt, the sectional chair (head alumni volunteer) for michigan at section.54.chair@apo.org and his boss, Michael Leahy who is the Regional Director for Michigan, Indiana & Illinois at region.6.director@apo.org . They will be able to give you good advice and contacts at MSU. (which will be useful under any scenario).

I think the brothers at MSU's chapter (Beta Beta) will be sympathetic, don't be surprised if they ask Steve and Mike how best to help you! Check out their web page at www.msu.edu/~apo .
